Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Get me into a new bike, probably a rigid MTB/69er

Alright SSFG, I'm feeling the need. The want. The yearning for another project.

The problem, however, is that I have two bikes that serve the same purpose, essentially.

Exhibit A---Commuter/lock up bike

Run them at different ratios, but I'm feeling the urge for a MTB, or city bike. Another commuter, of sorts. With racks and a rigid frame, but no cantilever brakes. There's no need in my area.

I have the option to take hold of a free NEXT frame---Boxstore brand---minus wheels and it has rusted components. But I have enough parts to make it come to fruition.

I'm conflicted. And the CL in the area offers no hope. One page goes all the way back to Dec. All pretty much the same frame.

Nah, for real, I'm contemplating it. Could be fun as a project. Make it all matchy matchy with DIY paint. T'd be so sick.

Main problem being a plethora of 26" wheelsets lying around these parts. They making me itch. There's enough for four more bieks.

Yep. Think so. Haven't seen it in person, yet. Just got the call on a free frame.

Cantis play well with racks and fenders if you want that sort of commuter/city bike. Do it based around 26" wheels as well.

Just watch craigslist for a mid-90's hookooekoo or stumpjumper or karakoram that someone is cleaning out of their basement and you'll be a lot happier than with a NEXT.

Buy rear wheel with IGH for the peugeot, change wheels when you feel like it. Bammo, two bikes in one.

Yeah, why not make the Pug your project and build a more versatile city/commuter bike? Presumably it has generous clearances that would make it a good choice, leagues ahead of an abysmal frame like a Next.

Building up a Next...? :cry: Why not spend $40 and get a decent used frame that doesn't have toy suspension that sops power and components that don't work out of the box.

I cut those up for making choppers, just about the only good use for them.

Exactly. The Pug was made for 27" wheels, so it has enormous clearances for fat 700c tires. Also the long chainstays and large fork rake leaves plenty of room for fenders while minimizing toe overlap. The rear horizontal dropout instead of track drops makes wheel removal with a rear full fender easy, while still allowing simple chain adjustment w/o a tensioner. This is what I did with an early 1970s French mercier; as you can see there is plenty of room for larger tires:

I'm not opposed to them, just don't have a set in the parts bin. There's a myriad of calipers, all shapes and sizes at hand.

My eyes are certainly peeled, but there's no magic happening in this hood. Everyone thinks their rusted schwinn world sport is worth five hundo, and their Next accrues value over time. Baffling.

I'm actually going to check out my alma matter's surplus auction tomorrow. There might be some potential.

Aye. I've got an set of full fenders off an old townie. Fairly certain they were for 26" tires, though. I'm going to pull them out of the box and see if they can be mocked up with a little bit of persuasion. You're right, there is plenty of room. The wheel gaps look like a set of Alabama shiners.

Just don't expect the "Next" to last. I broke a rear shock absorber on one trying to tighten the spring by hand. The linkages and dampening (front and rear) are a joke. I'd rather ride a rigid gas-pipe POS than a fully suspended Super-POS.
