Hi Everybody
Newbie MTB here , Roadie
Picked up a used rockhopper , need to upgrade components .

Ride high end road stuff and my last MTB had XT and Manitou front fork and Mavic 217Hoops and hubs .........

Shifters feel like they could break at any minute ( x4 and X5 derailleurs), Brakes are Avid BB5 and adjust one side,( rubbing on the repair stand) Not impressed with the wheels ,
So Far;
Put on dart and smoke tires and richie SPDs,
fork seems okay for my use (Long Island Single track , not really rooty or rocky but quick) will upgrade last .

Question is what to upgrade to without breaking the bank . Shock will probably come last after i get some miles on it

What Brakes , Wheels and Drivetrain options would you do if you had a limited budget . I can turn a wrench, so labor is cheap .

Thanks Guys -

sad part about getting a new mtb on long island is the ground is piled with snow so can't really ride it!

If you have a limited budget, swap the shifters to X9, change the calipers to BB7 to get your dual adjustment, and give the wheels a proper true/tension then you should be good to go.

Also get rid of the Dart/Smoke tire combo.

X9 shows up on Chainlove every so often.

X9 is for 9 speed ? Rockhopper comp disc is 8 speed
Change rear derailluer and cog set ? Will the Wheel that was stuck take a 9 spd rear cluster?

Looking for BB7 - Thanks

Didn't realize it was 8 speed. If you want to use X9 9 speed shifters, you just need to replace the 8 speed cassette with a 9 speed cassette.

If you want to upgrade, go with the X9 shifters and changeover to 9 speed as never said. As for the brakes, either upgrade to hydraulic or leave the BB5's. "Upgrading" to BB7s is a waste of money. They do not perform any better than the BB5s but they are supposed to be easier to dial in than the BB5s. Having dialed in several BB5s, (have them on two bikes) I can't see what the big concern is, they are REALLY easy to dial in. Personnaly, I'd put money into the fork before I would upgrade the brakes.
