BMX - Be honest here

I was just wondering how many of you guys have tried to ride intoxicated? And how it went if you have? I live on campus where I go to school, and if need be, theres always the chance that i'm going to have to. And if i'm breakin any rules, mods go ahead and tell me, and i'm sorry in advance if I am.

Welp, I guess I'm first up.

I've ridden while intoxicated, yes. For me, it went well - enjoyable, actually. There is a certain fine, high feeling that I get while riding. Mind you, I was not completely blotto drunk. Also, I tended to stick to side streets and paths and such where there was no traffic. Further, I had lights, front and rear.

There is, mind you, a bit of danger involved in this. Riding a bike requires balance; depending on your level of intoxication you might not have much, if any, of that. Further, if you're weaving, you might cause a car to swerve around you, which might lead to an accident (which may be attributed to you, the drunk rider). Also, there is such a thing as BUI, and the penalties tend to vary, depending on location. Then again, depending on where you are (e.g. Newport Beach, CA) you can get picked up while you're waiting for a cab, drunk.

This is something I would not necessarily reccommend, but I can see how people are led to do it. To combat this, I've put together a very very inexpensive single speed that I can leave behind and retrieve later (sober).

How do I rationalize this? Let's just say that despite the negatives, a 225 lb dude on a bike is still less of a hazard than a 225 lb dude in a 4000 lb truck.

I don't drink so I have no experience in this matter.

My friends and I used to go "Cruisin and boozin". This usually occurs late enough and far away from town that traffic is not even an issue. It is still dangerous though. A friend of a friend killed himself when he fell of his bike drunk with no helmet :<

When I started drinking I rode home drunk many times (and I feel that I am very lucky to have not wiped out badly) but now I usually walk. A drunk trek is not that bad :)

If I could get into the skate park just off campus with my bike, riding it toasted actually sounds really fun. But the cops here are ********, especially the tribal cops who roam 'downtown' after dark. Oh well.

+1 But i just knew i could make it, in all honesty though i almost did i think i was focusing on the rotation too much and did a bit too much back flip

But you didn't make it...Which is why I'm just going to stick to normal street/park riding, and see where the spirits take me.

I will be honest, you can get a dui on a bmx on streets and sidewalks in al and ga in the biblebelt. and I have had to deal with a guy with a broken collar bone from plowing into a street pole. he lived.
I would say keep as long as you arent driving do what ever you what.

we are talking slow rolling bmx type bicycles right? Not flying aircraft, operating oil tankers or driving formula 1 racecars..

So long as you keep it off the roadway and dont interfere with the gentry have fun with the hooch. Wear a helmet, and no stunting, bring something to eat, properly dispose of your bottles and trash..i.e-put it in a dumpster! Hopefully you will grow up at some point but admittedly hanging out and cruising about with your squadron of dizzy heathens can be fun on a warm summer night. Wont hold up in a court of law mind you so keep that in mind if you get the stupid idea of contemplating property damage or harassment of civilians.

Keep it private, keep it to yourself, don't bother anybody, watch your noise level, keep the cussin' to a minimium..nothing calls the trigger happy cops faster than a foul mouthed drunk so figure a group of young-punk-drunks would truly piss them off and one of your friends might have to live with the trauma of having a billy club shoved up his @$$, he'll be in therapy for years..spare each other the horror! Buy stock in southern comfort!

I've done it a couple times or so. Mostly on college campus bars, so I never really was on the open roads & streets. I did know a dude that got hit by a car riding his bike drunk while in HS, he had vertebrae issues, fractured, but not paralyzed or anything he didn't recover from at that time. Anyway, I quit drinking a while back, never regretted the decision either. No bui/dui ever and actually when I did drink and drive, I was an even better driver in terms of adhering to speed limits, other laws and was even more polite a driver. Letting others go first even though I had right of way at an intersection, 4 way stop and the like. Better to take that in your own charge & control than to get into a fender bender and have the police show up to discover what they wouldn't have even had a clue about. A dui isn't worth demanding right of way when another wasn't going to yield it anyway.

Used to do it a lot! Bicycle bar hopping (AKA Beercycling) is the sport of kings. Since I got married, these splendid occasions are much rarer. Me & my buddy will still go out & hoist a few- not to the point of staggering, but to the point where a peaceful benevolence flows from us. Always tried to stay off the main streets and stick to side streets or trails. Still have a scar the size of a Eisenhower dollar on my hip from launching one time too many from a 6' embankment.

Yes, it's stupid, dangerous, and irresponsible. If we all were perfect life would be boring. Don't regret a single trip.

I was riding the NASS course back in ~2007 ish just after we finnished building it and before the sponsors put the logos all over it.

Two bristol locals were riding and drinking, Craig Stevens and marlborough pete Marselle. There was a jump box and then a volcano after it which you could transfer from on to some flat back. It effectivly made two jumps boxes in a row and was very easy and fun to ride.

Pete Marselle was drunk, and was riding this line. One time he seemed to forget where he was going and transferd from the middle of the volcanoe rather than from the edge, thus not clearing the gap.

He landed on his leg and it made a loud noise. I got to the scene first and thought maybe its not broken, and he told me he thought it was. When I gave it a closer look and saw his foot was facing in a direction it should not be, I agreed and some one with a phone called an ambulance.

I think his leg didn't mend for over a year, googleing 'Pete Marselle' beings up no new riding
