GoPro has a 1080p camera already.

One thing to consider here is the video format. Looks like the ATC9K (and Contour) uses the .MOV format. Not sure I like that over the Gopro MP4 format.

The one plus of the ATC is it has a GPS module and Gopro doesn't.

Yes, but this has some other features. Laser aim, a built-in color screen so you can confirm your pointing direction, and it records G-force (not interesting to me but I guess someone must think it important). Plus I think it rotates in the mount like some other helmet cams so it's easier to get it level after mounting. And it costs about the same as the GoPro.

In any event, video files with extensions of .mov (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime#File_formats) and .mp4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_14) are usually nearly identical (well, the way things are arranged, the codecs used, etc.) and can usually be manipulated and played with the same software.

Can Mov video be edit with the same software for MP4? How about the players? For a while I recall having to use QuickTime for Mov.

Good to know because my rebate from REI is pretty high from all the stuff I bought last year and I might get a recorder from them either a GoPro or contour but I want to be sure.

Both cameras have their highs and lows. Don't forget about the Drift Innovation HD170 which has an integrated LCD, a remote control for remote activation, and ability to connect an external microphone, huge for me while cycle touring.

Regardless of what format it saves to, the more important details to consider would be:

What is the recording bitrate of the Audio?
What is the Bitrate for the Video as well?
Just recording at 1920x1080x30/60fps can bring significiant differences if the recorded stream is 2.0mbps or 4.0mbps

The support teams should be able to provide this information to you before purchase, and you shouldn't have a problem using any commonly available video editing software to perform your edits.
