there's a company that is working on a cycloputer that has a rear-view camera. if it's cheap i think i might try it, especially if i can mount the camera surreptitiously under my saddle.

I don't get it. Is this so your life insurance will pay off quickly? Seems to me it's one of those "we need to increase the paranoia level" items.

They have mirrors for this, you know. I bet a mirror would be lighter than a camera anyway.

for the road cyclist zipping along at 25mph and shaving gram after gram, not so great.

but imagine the appeal for the guys who really prioritize visibility and safety. the guys who wear bright yellow and put little mirrors on their helmets. they'd like this.

They have mirrors for this, you know. I bet a mirror would be lighter than a camera anyway.

I've tried one helmet-mounted mirror and was disappointed. Too small, angle too critical, too much vibration. A bike-mounted camera with screen would be neat, and I'd pay $25 for one. It'll probably cost $500 though.

I've never had to replace the battery on a mirror. (I have a little mirror on my helmet; I prioritize seeing up ahead and back behind.)

There is no doubt that helmet and eyeglass mounted mirrors work well, but I think this product might appeal to a different segment of the market. Cyclists who use mirrors swear by them and wouldn’t ride without them, but we all know that there are many riders out there who would just never consider trying them.



I have ridden with Evan's Cerevellum prototype and it is nice to briefly glance down and see the camera view in the same location as a standard cyclo-computer. The vibration and positioning issues that some people have with mirrors are not an issue with this product. The accident recording is a nice feature too…even if it is something that none of us really want to think about.



…and even though safety is the primary reason for the Cerevellum, it would also be interesting to see the face of the rider drafting behind you in a race. I am sure the UCI would have some thoughts on that type of use for a product like this.

I would love to see the viewing angle of this thing for riding in NYC traffic.

I'd be afraid that the seatpost mounted camera would be obscured by my flabby ass hanging off the back of the saddle. If I'm going to see ass while I ride, I don't want it to be mine.
