Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - General Instructions for First Use of Garmin Edge

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I find that the manual for the Garmin edge 205 has some surprising omissions, like how to actually use it (as opposed to setting it up).
This is what I've figured based on experimentation. Let me know if I have it right. Note that I have turned Auto-pause to ON.
Let's say I'm riding to a mall, doing shopping, and riding back.
1. Turn on the Edge
2. Wait until the satellites page disappears
3. Press the start/stop button
4. Ride to the mall
5. Press the start/stop button, put Edge in pocket
6. Do shopping, return to bike
7. Press start/stop
8. Ride home
9. Press start/stop
10. Turn off Edge
Is that correct? Would that be recorded as one trip? If I turned off the edge at the mall instead of just pressing Start/Stop, would it be two trips?
Thanks.

Unless you reset it, it should be recorded as one trip even if you turn it off. Just make sure you stop the timer before turning it off. I have forgotten to reset it before a new ride and the two routes were connected by a straight line and counted as one trip. The elapsed time was something like 138 hours.

^^^ This. I now have an Edge 500 but kept the 350 for use on my fall cross bike. The software is completely different on the two units, so I had to relearn the 350. It is not as intuitive and very easy to screw up ride statistics. Good news is I never noticed any of the quirks until after I had the 500. I surprised you can still find the 205 for sale.

Well, there's something I'm still not quite understanding, then. I've been experimenting by turning it on, walking around the yard and neighborhood, then bringing it inside, and uploading the data to Garmin Connect. I've never ever pressed the reset button, and yet each of these tests has recorded as a separate "activity." Perhaps the act of uploading the data serves to reset things(?)
I don't understand how Garmin left this stuff out of the manual. Maybe my problem is that I used to write technical manuals.
You might consider checking out the Garmin Edge 205 forum:

I have Edge 705 and learned a ton of stuff about in on the Garmin 705 forum.

The Garmin Edge 205 forum isn't so good, because there's almost no one there. The most recent posts are from, like, October and November. They should have a forum for general Garmin Edge questions.
In any case, I just got back from my first ride with the Garmin, and it worked great. Thanks for the help.
