Introductions - Howdy from Plano, TX
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello, I'm Brian. Originally from Tulsa, OK, but moved near Dallas for a job after college. I haven't really been feeling my current job, so I'm planning on going on a bike tour for a few months and seeing where I end up. Just bought a Surly Long Haul Trucker last week at a LBS in Tulsa (Tom's), which I think think will help me get the job done. Now I'm just trying to acquire all the equipment and take in as much knowledge about bike touring as I can before warmer weather comes along.

Howdy Brian, and welcome to the forums. I'm over here in Garland.
Be sure to check into the Touring forum and the Texas regional forum.
Watch the weather on your tour. A fellow I know in another forum had a grand summer tour scheduled, got out on the road the first day, nearly had heat stroke, and that was the end of his tour. If you can work it into spring or fall, it might go smoother.
If you're so inclined, look into randonneuring. It's not touring, but it'll let you get some miles on your bike. http://www.lonestarrandon.org/ and http://www.rusa.org/

Thanks for the welcome, advice, and links, Stephen. I plan on doing some more extensive training and mini-tours in the early spring, then make some extended pit stops at organic farms along the way during the peak of the summer...or something like that. Still got a lot more planning to do. But your point is well taken about taking account of the heat. Thanks!

My favorite jersey is my Tom's jersey! I went to Oklahoma State and my brother still lives in Tulsa so we visit regularly. Welcome to the site :-)
