I have an old Raleigh road bike with 27" wheels that are blowing spokes by the minute. If I were to change to 700c wheels, would I have any problems with brake fit issues? I'm still unsure if I would like to change it to a SS yet, but it would be a big factor on what I will end up doing.

There's a good chance the brakes you already have will work. 700c rims are smaller in diameter, but not by a great amount. If your brake pads can be adjusted further out by several mm, they'll probably work.

Yes. I recently switched from 27" to 700c and was able to keep my old brake. It barely reaches and if I had lots o' money I would replace it with a long reach, but it's just fine for a poor grad student like me.

i made that conversion and i could not find new long reach calipers that were long enough...nashbar's did not fit, shimano's did not fit....i ened up tearing apart another old bike just to get a brake that inly half works cuz it is so old, crappy and flexy...but at least it reaches

You need to go in ~4 more millimeters toward the hub (radius), as the difference in diameter should be about 8mm.

Keep an eye out for old weinman brakes, they are pretty common on old bikes. They may all look the same but come in a bunch of sizes, the higher the number on the brake the longer the reach. Typically the rear wheel is more affected by swiching to 700's and usually will need the longer brake.

If the aforementioned tips don't help, check Sheldon Brown's site

Make your own Drop Bolt

Or buy some

This is a good start place for all brake stuff

I had to do the same thing on my beater fixed and it turned out I could drop my shoes enough. Lucky me.

I've not had a problem on my four conversions. They only use a front brake.
I need to put new pads on though.

Tecktro will sell you a shiny new dual pivot long reach caliper for I think $35?
