Fifty Plus (50+) - Days are getting longer !

A month ago I would have been in total darkness riding home from work. Today there was light all the way home.

Yep, it sure looks like spring is just around the corner!:D

Signs of the change of season are showing here in western Oregon too, daffodils are poking out of the ground, trees are showing signs of life and I picked hedgehog mushrooms in the forest last week.

Unfortunately, Punxsutawney Phil will be seeing his shadow on Feb 2. Hate to burst your bubble. Same darn thing happens every year.

Just starting to notice a bit of change, in the evenings, here in Arizona. Thought I was going to run out of light Wednesday evening, but made it home without having to take off the sunglasses (Rx) to see.

Another 4"/100mm of snow forecast here for tonight ... more in about the middle of next week ... I'm just a cry-baby when it's cold ... roll on the spring ...

So intense was the cold which gripped the Chicago area on this date 26 years ago Chicago's temperature dipped to -27f degrees.

The blast of bitter air predicted to hit tonight with biting northwest winds isn't in the same league as the brutal record cold spells of 1982 and 1985, nor for that matter the succession of arctic outbreaks which locked the metro area into a succession of deep freezes in the barbaric winters of the mid and late 1970s. But the incoming blast of frigid air is to be the area's coldest in a year and could put the city's first official 0-degree reading since January 10 of last year on the books.

It won't be until after a winter rainstorm arrives before I'll be cycling with much regularity.

74 degrees F, and sunny in Los Angeles today - an absolutely perfect day to be on a bike. Hope all of you folks in the frozen tundra have a mild winter and can get back on the road soon!!

I've noticed the days myself, gradual and subtle here in Dallas, but still a good sign. Spring is on its way. :)

In Seattle, we've picked up 35 minutes of daylight since the winter solstice. Starting to be a little noticable in the evening...

I rode with the knuckleheads with Chainlink on their FBC Full Moon Fiasco ride on Tuesday night (and deep into the morning) and had a blast. Come to think of it, perhaps the alcohol helped make such a cold snowy ride seem reasonable...

True there are early signs of increasing daylight... however, there is still an awful lot of basketball left.

By and large, yes. There was a meander on the MUP through the park around Montrose Harbor where the pavement happened to be under the snow and ice, but that was the exception, we usually aim for dry roads.

Maybe it's just the nights are getting shorter??!

My wife and I just noticed last evening that it was still mostly daylight at 6:15 PM. Granted it was 10 degrees F. outside, but the days are getting longer none the less. :)

Longer days mean warmer temps. Warmer temps mean longer rides. Longer rides mean better fitness, and on it goes.

I remember that happening to me last year and being disappointed. I was so used to riding in complete darkness.

I prefer to ride in the morning darkness. Evening not so much. The morning darkness is peaceful, especially if early enough before the commuter traffic starts. Also you can't tell how gloomy it is and the day will be. :innocent:

On NPR's Prairie Home Companion this weekend a man (? the official weather forecaster) from Embarass, MN was interviewed live on the show about the weather up there. Apparently that town has the unofficial record for lowest temperature, presumably in the continental US (Wikipedia). The announcer asked the guest what are the chances to set the record this year. We will find out soon because the weatherman said that the last week in January and first in February are the coldest of the year, and that's my impression too.

So my point is that while the solstice is celebrated as being a turning point, for illumination, I will start to "see light at the end of the tunnel" for warmer temperatures in about two weeks. For me even December is still not quite "winter." :rolleyes:
