I'm stuck inside today with a really bad head cold and the windchill outside is well before freezing, so to kill time I've set up a spreadsheet to estimate how much I've spent on my SSFG bikes. Over the last year and a half I've bought 3 complete SSFG bikes, done a conversion on one old 10-speed, and built two bikes from the frame up. I've added up the initial cost and the cost of all newly purchased parts, including accessories such as fenders, racks, lights etc. I've not included existing parts I had in stock or which were swapped out from other bikes. Some items I've estimated from memory, as I don't have any receipts, such as many eBay auction items. I'm sure I've forgotten some small items, so I've rounded the cost up accordingly. All parts costs include shipping and / or sales tax as applicable. The costs from the lowest to the highest are as follows:
Mercier 100 SS conversion: $220
VISP TRX790 FG: $525
Salsa Casseroll SS: $775
Motobecane Messenger FG: $810
Leader 721tr FG: $850
Mercier Kilo WT FG: $990
All of these bikes are pretty much in their final stage of modification or development.
Anyways, just thought it might be interesting to see what the initial and final outlays have been.
Jamis Sputnik - 745.
I could have bought a new one cheaper then I got my frame. But I think 2007 was a great year for the frame.
Schwinn Sports Tourer, FG (retired), SS (polo) - $250
S-Works E5, SS (retired, currently geared) - $800
Trek 2200, FG - $0

Motobecane Track - $400 (rough estimate)
TET Track - $580
Most/all of the upgraded parts on the Motobecane went straight to the TET, so you could look at the Motobecane as $300 and the TET as $680 if that makes you feel better.

@Thirteen and Evil. It's a combination of some $100+ components like the Brooks Team Pro saddle and a lot of accessories like fenders, rack, computer, seat bag, BeerNuts wrench etc. It all adds up quickly. I've changed the bars, bar tape, stem, seatpost (VO Grand Cru), cog, lockring, Surly Tugnut, brake levers (compact) and tires ($70 for Pasela TG folding). Also, I had to pay sales tax because I live in Texas, and bd is in Houston.
-Schwinn Sprint conversion: $240. Velocity Aeros, nothing special and kept some old (heavy) parts. Commuter/beater bike.
-Motobecane Jury: $724 and counting. Still need crankset, tubes, brake, seatpost, grips, bottom bracket and saddle. Probably close to $1,000 when it's done.

When totaling up eveything I only spent about 350.00 on my Fuji Del-Rey conversion. The biggest expenses were the bottom bracket, wheelset, chainring, brakeset, tires and pedals. All new. Had the frame sandblasted and powdercoated for 75.00. Got lucky there as the painter was doing an order for a gazillion parts and he slipped my frameset in as a favor. He even managed to save the chrome tips. Everything else I had either stock or in my parts bin.
Got my eye on a Kilo S3X, though for this year. Got a couple of 18% hills around here. 48x16 is just a little too tough to do w/o switchbacks. I like the idea of having some gearage to go w/fg.

530$ for my Langster. I refuse to buy anything for it until something breaks on it or just has to be replaced. Its been almost 3 years now so I feel ive gotten a good return on investment here.

I have my current #1 ride insured for the $3100 I actually paid out of pocket.
I got a very good deal on the frame during the worst of the "economic downturn;" I moved the Phil bottom bracket and King headset from an older bike; and so I doubt if I could rebuild it for that amount if something happened to it.
I have some pictures of it but I don't know how to post them here.

yeah your investment has probably been returned multiple times, as you have never felt the need to change anything out. how about brake pads, tires? anyways, you show restraint i lack.

My 1955 Raleigh Lenton came to me complete and original for $100.00... I wrapped the bars with leather ($20.00), swapped the saddle for an old Wrights W3N (free), and added Bluemel fenders ($30.00) which brought the total up to $150.00.
The 1973 Gran Sport was a $10.00 thrift store find that I built up with spares from my shop and I did build a new back wheel for it... have no idea what it is worth as one might have to factor in the 25-30 hours of work that went into the decoupage and the intense cleaning and polishing of the shiny bits.

Hard to say because my crank, saddle and bars/stem all came from other bikes or were given to me.
I spent $500 on the frame and $400 on the wheels, though.

'09 Gutterball SS/FG $600, plus pedals, bar & stem and saddle for approx. another $150. $750 + tax.
'74 Favorit FG conv. with parts from a '76 Nishiki Custom Sport, all salvaged. Wheelset and tires & tubes, maybe $300. Aluminum bar and vinyl tubing $12, bell another $10. I'll guess $375 with tax.
'88 Karakoram SS conv. $40. I used parts taken off other bikes, but bought a half link and an adapter to install a threadless stem, $15. However, the parts I put on it from my other bikes are worth about $250. But I doubt I'd get $300 for it.

My '88 Trek 400 is a combo of salvage parts, mostly. The original bike was dumpstered, so I got it for free. I stripped most of the parts from a '91 Series-5 PDG for the rebuild. I bought an IRO rear hub, new spokes, cheap pedals, a cog, chain and bar tape. All said and done I spent about $100 on it.
I'm working on a SSCX build and doing it on the cheap by hitting up sales.
Snagged a Ritchey Carbon Comp fork for $130
Got my IRO custom wheels for $175
CR720 brakes, Jagwire Ripcords and Tektro levers for $85
I'm getting a deal on a Redline Conquest Pro SS frame, and a pal's looking into hooking me up with a crankset.
I should pull off the entire thing for about $800 instead of $1200.

hey gaozilla, I just checked out your bianchi pista and it is crazy sick! do you have your fuji track posted up anywhere?
haha, thanks. i havent posted it up anywhere. if you wanna see how it looked like when i had it built up you can click here (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4151/4975767933_4e06ab1df4_z.jpg). i swapped most of the parts on the fuji onto the pista, so it looks like this (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5249/5317905020_7fc2f7ecd6_z.jpg) now.
Peugeot U0-8: $400
Motobecane Grand Record: $700
Raleigh Super Grand Prix: $0
Peugeot P8: $230
All rough estimates
My shogun conversion included a lot of free or traded parts from friends. It's not built up right now but I could put it back together for maybe 20 dollars (cable/housing/bar tape). I think I spend maybe 150 dollars on it originally. 175 for the frame and some wheels and 50 dollars for the crank, bb, chain.
So let's say 200.
My Volpe I don't know. When I first built it I spend 200 dollars on the frame and wheels, then another 200 (?) on cranks, chain, cog, handlebar, stem, saddle. I had levers and brakes already.
But since then I've swapped some nicer parts on that I already had, including a carbon fork that was free, and brakes and crank and rear wheel from my geared cross bike. The cost of those originally was probably around 400 dollars. So If I add them in maybe 800? But some of the parts from the volpe will go on the geared bike...
For me it gets hard to add up. I'm always swapping parts around and I tend to hoard things so I forget what I paid, or I trade things.

lol working on bikes people bought at the bike auction today made me think of this thread.
since i'm not planning on selling my bikes anytime soon, i guess i can list my prices

-continuum: $360 (no wheelset, borrowed from the peloton for now)
-ritchey: $350+wheels and group from broken lynskey

Kilo TT plus
120 Formulas laced to DP 18s
165 Sram Omnium
20 Ritchy Ergo Drops
70 Fizik Arione Wing Flex
30 Tubes and Tires
10 Water Bottle holder
50 Chain/cog/lockring
I got the pedal for free
So including the cost of the bike....roughly 870 bucks
My Schwinn has cost me 50 for the frame and 15 for a new BB everything else is stuff I had lying around.

I acquired my current bike through a series of trades, so I guess the total amount I've spent on it would be a cumulative total of all the money I spent on the bikes preceding it.
Bottecchia road frameset: $30
Stem, bars, brake, post, saddle, wheelset: $320
Total: $350
Traded for an old Carlton track frameset.
Wheels: $180
Bars and stem: $50
Post and saddle: $30
Chain, cog, tires, etc.: $80
Total: $340
Traded for a Fraysee conversion.
So I have a Fraysee conversion with a Raleigh stem, Stronglight cranks with spacers, and cheapo unbranded Chinese wheels that I ultimately paid $690 for.

Keeping track with a spreadsheet is an excellent idea. Knowing exactly how much you spent on bike stuff can be a useful tool.
I make sure I save every receipt from bike related purchases and other transactions just for this. It also keeps me in check so I don't spend too much. :twitchy:
Rollin' almost 1500 when I'm on the trail. That's the bike, accessories, clothing, and all.
Ride more & spend less.
