Cyclocross - Shifter Compatability

I recently received my new bike. My LBS calls and tells me it won't work because, among other things, the Ultegra Shifters are incompatable with the X9 rear deraileur. Wtf? Please help!

your shop is correct. the sram derailleurs use a 1:1 cable pull ratio, while your ultegras use a 2:1 ( I believe, not 100% sure on that number) but anyway, the shifter pulls a different amount of cable then the derailleur uses.

Bike is new new. It was a custom buildup.

STI Ultegra shifters. I am tempted to just buy an ultegra rear deraileur and send the SRAM back. Funny thing is that he said my front XT was fine with the ultegra and that if I got a rear XT deraileur I would be fine. ??? Is there nothing I can do? Why was I not told this when I ordered the bike? Can I do something to make it compatable? Really mad because I am registered for a cross race on the 23rd and he doesn't get back until the 22nd. -_- I am thinking about buying another bike and sending everything back that I do not need. Possibly a Marin Highway one and swapping the bar, the fork, wheels, tires, shifters, crank. Sending everything else back. We will see... -_-;

That sounds a bit over the top with buying a whole new bike. He is correct that it isn't compatible. And the reason the front works is it is a Shimano made... so they were made under the same specs. The rear doesn't work because it's made by a different company, that doesn't run under Shimano specs. The shop may have not ever tried running SRAM-Shimano.. or maybe it worked before on another bike with Shimano, but not the exact combo. For example, I can get some low end gripshifts to work with shimano deraileurs but not high end gripshifts.

PS. If he gets back on the 22nd just ride the race, it will be fun and a learning experience. It's only 5 days away, and even if you order a whole new bike you would be with out for part of that time. Also as I stated before I think that maybe over kill.

i would defer, but as i stated in the post before yours... its very very rare.

Got it figured out. :) Traded my X9 Deraileur plus 20 bones for an Ultegra Rear Deraileur. ^_^; Should get my bike on Tubesday.

Shimano STI shifters will not work with this SRAM deraileur. SRAM doesn't make any road deraileurs, and their mountain deraileurs have a "1:1 actuation ratio". You can use some SRAM shift levers with Shimano deraileurs. They are designated as "2:1 shifters".
