Well, now that I wondered about this in another thread, I thought I'd actually just ask specifically here....

Is there anyone else here riding with total hip replacement?

That's me in the new "avatar" I'm using over there to the left with my name.

Sometimes it still freaks me out to think about all the miles I've put on that thing since being operated on in November of 2000.

2,750 miles this outdoor season alone.

Is there alot of pain associated with it? Does it feel like your other hip now?

This was my fourth full season of cycling with it. It has been great. I was in a lot of pain prior to getting the replacement, then rehab took a long time. But it feels just like the other normal hip now most of the time.

But there are times when those muscles holding everything in place just seem to get tired and sometimes a little sore. I'm going through one of those times now. The only thing I can do is try to rest for a week or more without any bike riding and see where that leads me. Thing is, I'm really tempted to go on a ride today....supposed to hit 50 and the sun is out. Days of riding outside here are limited at this time of year with the outdoor season nearing an end, so this is killing me!

I have 2 THR's both done in 2003. I'm riding about 130 miles a week and am a bit worried about wearing them out. So far they feel pretty good even though the right one had problems - heterotopic ossification which is bone growing along some of the muscles. I think my main concern is falling. I had pain for almost 10 years am anow enjoying my new life.

Hips can last 15-20 years depending on how much wear. If you are young, you may need to have another hip thrown in if you wear it out. Just keep your health insurance payments made. Geo

I just have to say this. I have the utmost respect for people like you. Compared to the majority of people that will lie down and do nothing after having a major surgery like yours, you took it in stride and are continuing to be active. Keep it up.

There's a thread in the 50+ forum you may find interesting on the same subject.

Hipcycler,
Way to go! First time I have heard of anyone with a THR riding but with Two knees done on my side I feel your pain somedays I just want to relax, but that bike keeps calling me out. I don't know the actual timespan you should worry about but knees usually get around 10-15 year range depending on stress and wear. Maybe longer with the new materials. I was up and on the bike 8 weeks after my last surgery. Going for the three month check-up Tuesday and will see what the Doc says.

Keep up the pedaling and listen to your body!

Ti Knees here.

My wife had her total hip replacement on July 1 of 2004. She's been riding off and on since August, and is slowly working her way back into condition. I'm proud of her to be able to do what she does. Sucks that it happened, but it's really cool to see her pain free and living a normal life.

I'm impressed by your mileage, you have more than I got this year, and my hip is healthy.

Good job. Keep up the good work.
