...and he built it when he was 18!

At 18, I was welding shock towers back together.

That is an incredible frameset!!!

Where's Drillium Dude. There's a lot to gawk at in those pics.

Paul Taylor used to be based out of Mill Valley near San Francisco up until a few years ago. So I guess one of his bikes from a few years ago would be made in California. I've had two now:

...and with all these names you guys are still just scratching the tip of the iceberg (to mix metaphors)...more were in NorCal than SoCal (maybe because of the Eisentraut training ground and the Mtn. Bike scene in Marin), but there are still many not yet named. I'll let some others have at it before filling in...

I never considered it but riding a Cali built bike would be cool. I wish I could fill in this list but I have nonidea. Anyone have one in a 62?

Wait, what bout Allan Wanta?

OK, in addition to all the Worthies that have been noted, I'll add a few from memory (I'm sure there are more but they will have to drift up from deep memory or I'll have to dig thru my bookmarks!)
John Kari
Dale Saso
Mike Celmins
Greg Diamond
John Sencak (Wolf Cycles)
Sam Cotton
David Ybarrola (Persechini)
Jeff Lyon (migrated to Oregon)
Joe Breeze
John Murphy (Columbine)
and if you stretch the concept a little, since he apprenticed with Eisentraut so did at least his early work in Cali:
Mark Nobilette
and if you really stretch and include Reno as an honorary California suburb ;):
Roland Della Santa
whoops, just thought of a couple more:
Chris Kelly (in Oakland, or was it Nevada City?)
The Sycip Bros. (Sonoma County)
Steve Rex (of course!)
Scot Nicol
John Castellano
Ross Shafer
Rick Hunter

Time for you to follow the links and or do some searching on your own. It is not that hard, especially with names. No fault that you don't know them, now you have some info, work it.

25 posts and nobody mentions Santana (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35954664@N08/4019945056/in/photostream/)?

They've (http://santanatandem.com/) been at the forefront of American - and world - tandeming since 1976.

Tim Neenan of Lighthouse Cycles is still building in Santa Ynez, CA and has been building bikes since the 70's.
Also, Chris Pauley, Santa Barbara built for Tierra Cycles with Greg Diamond in the 80's

And if you want a sense for the environment of California bicycle creation look up the Cycle Smiths on Mark Bulgier's fantastic site: http://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/cyclesmiths/
and look up the many rememberances of the early Masi years on CR. IMO the Carlesbad Masi was a formative hotbed for the California talent in the '70s.

Actually Ross Shaefer was mentioned, and before Salsa he was Santana.
Glad to see those other Great names from Santa Barbara area and elsewhere added...keep it going...
