like the jelly belly guys for example. i was just kinda curious cause it doesn't seem like there's a whole ot of opprotunity compared to the european guys, i mean it's not just as big of a sport here. thanks

c'mon, i'm just curious, cause i don't know if most US pros do it as their only means of living or what, i don't want bak statements or anything, just a rough estimate. I was reading something saying that most experienced, accomplished riders, such as Jan and other non-lance big names, make between 600 and 800 k a year, USD. I know the US guys can't make anywhere near that much, whih left me wondering. someone's gotta know?

The vast majority would be lucky to make $50 grand US a year. Plus prizemoney.

Some of them have part time jobs too. :)

g'day,

interesting question......not having an intimate knowledge of the US pro scene, however from what I read & seen it is notunlike Oz in some respects. 'Most' would barely be making a living, compared to what they would make if they held down a full time job. 'A few' would be doing comfortably. 'The Minority' would be doing well. As with Oz, the bucks are all in Europe, get yourself on a division 1 team & you're doing very nicely thank you very much!

Go see the movie the Hard Road, it's a decent view of what a poorer US team is like. I know Sierra-Ofoto races and trains on the same bikes, runs their training camps out of their directors own house (and are fed out of his pocket) work second jobs, have to drive themselves about...it ain't exactly high fashion.

Around the time of the TdF I heard an NPR broadcast that talked about Chris Horner. According to the commentator, Diana Naiad (sp?), Horner made $50K on the Webcor squad. I don't think that most of the guys on Webcor are paid a salary.

One of the Jelly Belly riders ,who is a local, is currently working at one of the LBS in the off season to make a few bucks while racing CX locally. From the sounds of it, they get equipment, a leased car and a credit card to pay for travel expenses. Anything beyond that is a bonus. I'm sure some of the bigger names make an OK salary but nothing to write home about.

The one big money D3 team (Saturn) folded and took along with it most of the big D3 salaries.
