im getting a bike for my 10 year old son to go mountain biking with me, I have seen a good pike at a good price but it has 160mm of travel, i ride real rough terrain and ride a 160mm travel bike but does anyone think this is to much travel for my son being 10 years old

Hm, I think your son may want more than just a fork. ;)

Alright, assuming you meant a bike with a Pike, unless your son is really tall for his age, the entire bike is likely to be too big. Riding too big a bike is intimidating, and has a good chance of turning your son off to mountain biking. What are you willing to spend? Several companies make some nice 24's (kids' 24's, not DJs with long top tubes meant for adults) that have a much better chance of fitting him.

I would also make sure your son is ready for REALLY TOUGH terrain. Be sure to ride at his level for the first few months.

Introduction to stitches is a second year course as I remember.

Congrats on spending time with your son. Values are good.

Can't comment on the too much travel - his weight and height will have a lot to do with that. I started riding with my oldest when he was nine - he is now 16 and is an incredible rider - road, DH, BMX, DJ, etc. I am now starting with my youngest (who is 9) - hopfully he gets into it as much as his brother.

I got my son an Ibex last year. It was slight too large for him but I adjusted the brakes so he could grab the handles and lowered the seat a bit and he was fine. Now he loves mountain biking being able to complete an almost 6 mile single track.

The bike is Deore brakes, hubs and gearing and Tru/Ativ cranks, a crappy suspension fork (but good for him) and has disc brake mounts. I bought his used for 250. It looked brand new still had the nubbies on the dry rotted tires. The guy I bought it from said his son out grew it way too fast.
