I saw at the LBS some giant 700x55 cc tires mounted on rims only 22mm wide.

does the tire's bead fit regular rims?

Since there will not be much pressure in the tire, I don't think it'd be a problem mount that tire on a 22mm wide rim. Inside diameter is 22mm or is it outside?

Whaddya mean by regular rims exactly?

I think the OP means if you need a wider rim to run such a wide tire. I honestly have never had any issues running wider tires on the same rims I use 23s all the way to 35s so I don't see any reason why there would be a problem mounting them.

That's interesting. My lad's polo bike has the 'normal' width road rims but having seen the improvement in hard cornering on my polo bike after fitting 32s (I've got slightly wider rims), it might be worth a try.

I've had Schwalbe Big Apples on Open pro rims and have them currently on Aerospokes. Haven't had a problem with them. I keep them aired around 35-40psi

Oh, I have some MTB rims that are 20mm wide. Run 2.2" on them just fine. Not as good at lower pressures compared to wider rims, though.

Tire gets to rollin' over when you go below 35 PSI or so.

after I've filled in a couple of dumb forms for the government :(

In general, you can get away with fitting wide ass tires on thin rims, but you don't want to go the other way around.

That's the one thing you need to be careful of. I've never had a problem mounting or using wide tires on narrow rims, but after putting 2.4 inch knobbies on my MTB I found I could make them wash out under hard cornering on pavement. Not that I should be taking hard corners on a MTB with knobby tires in the first place.... but that's a different story.

Yea it takes a little more effort to get the alignment right, but it works.

Gyes, I love what you've done to your WT. I've been riding conversions and a too-small vintage track bike, but have considered going with either the WT or TT Pro for mainly commuting and hauling around town.

Your WT has got me really lusting after the fat tire clearances. I've looked at your photos a number of times on Velospace because it looks so adaptable...

But nice bike. Is it your main ride now, or how do you find that you use it in comparison with your other rides? Is this more of a hauler or bad weather machine, or is it just as good for speedy commutes and/or long training rides?

Considering trying to but some 35's through my rear triangle I doubt it will fit, the max i fit was a 25cc thick slick and it was 5-6mm on both sides. so probally a 35 will be pushing it.

I use the black Crosscheck as the bad weather/light hauler, the grey crosscheck as the heavy hauler/trainer, and the WT as the speedy ride/commuter/fun ride. They're all used relatively the same amount with the black crosscheck ahead by a few
