This week's weigh-in was gratifying, after the up-and-down of the past several weeks. It'll be a challenge to keep it going through the rest of the week, though, since the weekend was full of house guests and a big chili party for my wife's birthday. So now I'm on a 5-day death march. ;)
Unfortunately there was a problem this weekend that involves this thread and the forum in general, and I want to clear the air a little.
I received a request to remove someone from this thread, because he was turned off by the attitudes and tone displayed in another thread on the forum, and no longer wants to spend time here.
Now if someone is as sensitive as a a baby seal condom and can't take the rough and tumble here, that's there choice. But folks, please, remember:
1. I am not a moderator on Bike Forums. I have never been a moderator on Bike Forums.
2. I am not a moderator of this thread. I've been starting it for the past six weeks now, because I'm up about this time and want to do my part for the group, but I don't control the thread. If you want to stop participating, just stop. If you want to join, join in.
3. Really, folks, if you don't like a thread, don't read it. If you don't like a certain poster, ignore them. You can do both and still participate here.
Thanks.

I'm back up to 282.6. This is what happens to a formerly active man who is having a hard time walking at the moment.
I think I hit bottom on Monday night, after two days of my knee injuries flaring up just as I thought I was improving. I postponed indefinitely my cross country trip Friday night. I spent all day Saturday coping with the overwhelming support I was offered by my friends on Facebook. The stress and lack of sleep caught up to me when I nearly fainted shopping on Sunday.

It's not original. It's from Tom Reedy on the Shakespeare newsgroups. It was used to describe anti-Stratfordians who propose theories about the 'true author' of the Shakespeare canon and then get upset when anyone criticizes their ideas.

Think of this as climbing a mountain. Sometimes you gotta stop or take a step back to readjust your footing and get ready for the big ascent. And there's worse things to happen than find yourself "coping with the overwhelming support." You could've been "coping with the overwhelming indifference."
Just take care of yourself for a bit and get downshifted into a slightly different mindset. If you're not exercising much, you can't eat like you did when you were. But that's not even really all that important right now in the bigger picture of taking care of yourself.

I take that back. It is original, to an extent, because I misquoted. Here's the line from 2003:
"Chortling? CHORTLING? Dude, I'm just trying to help her grow a skin thicker than a baby seal condom."

I've lost a total of 6.2#'s! I'm excited and motivated. Really dreaded the scales this morning as I have not been pushing very hard this week due to cuttin firewood and then yesterday was NFL Championship day and that meant no workout and PARTY!
will be back on the plan this week.
Now I get to go Red Lobster for lunch as a reward. Will only eat out once per week and then only if I lose weight. Oh and that will ony be after a good workout.
Good luck to all ya'll.

Got my game back!
I've been in training for a group run, so a few times a week I've been getting my heart rate into the 160s. (The "Couch to 5K" program features alternating brief runs and walks -- so far I'm up to max 3 minutes running at a time.) Plus, no more eating late at night.
Of course, today my left Achilles tendon is screaming, I'm limping around the office, and I'm not sure what I'll be doing for tonight's areobic session. But that's a question for later in the evening. For now, I'll be be happy with the results of the week's efforts.

We all know I was about 435 pound when I started this journey back in the fall of 2009.
1/3 = 280.0
1/10 = 273.4
1/17 = 272.2
1/24 = 271.8
Honestly, this would go much faster if I didn't gain 5 pounds before losing 6 each week. Seriously. Watching the scales is weird right now for me. I can't wait till Winter is over and I can get my groove back.

Slight uptick this week. Goals are to get back on the exercise bike. Normally I ride Monday nights while watching Chuck, but I was out late donating a bunch of BSO's to a co-op that's starting up so I got home a bit late and missed it. I have some Dr. Who coming in Netflix soon, so that should be good to ride to. In short my goal is to watch more tv, ...and ride while doing it.

Stop watching the scales daily. It's not a bad idea for a 400 pound guy to do it, since they need to learn how their body fluctuates in weight. For a person who is only a little overweight, like yourself, it's exercise in frustration.

Don't worry. I monitor my weight daily out of habit and amusement more than anything else. Also, despite dropping the weight, I am still learning the finer points about how my weight fluctuates. I'm not frustrated when my weight goes up, especially when the weight gain makes logical sense.

Oh - forgot to mention... the daily weight checks are also one of the ways I remember to exercise self-control. Like for example - ordering in Chinese is not big deal one in a while. But it's not a good idea to order in every day. When I do that, my weight reflects it. Maybe it sounds silly, but it works for me.

I love this thread! You folks are Awesome motivators!!!
Our company had their annual sales training last week. 3-1/2 days of corporate lunches and dinners--including one in a luxury box at the Pittsburgh Penguin's Game. I tried to make "wise" decisions. I've come to learn that if there's more than one choice, one of them is better than the other. (Plus, I'm using the My Fitness Pal app on my Droid and online to keep track of calories now!!)
So with that said, here's the numbers:
1/3 279.4
1/10 280.4
1/17 280.8
1/24 280.0
I'm happy to have stayed the same this week....
1/10/11 ---> 279.0
1/17/11 ---> 274,9
1/25/11 ---> 275.0
what a bad week, I damaged my achilles tendon playing squash and couldn't walk for a couple of days.
I'll try to swim a couple of times next week.

It's winter (at least in the Northern Hemisphere).
There are a lot of us trying to work out, doing things that aren't riding bikes. I started jogging/running on a treadmill, and have an annoyed Achilles tendon to show for it. This week I switched over to an "arc" machine (a variety of elliptical) that keeps the antle at the ankle more or less constant, so the Achilles gets a rest while the rest of the legs get to move.
Somehow, I just can't bring myself to use a trainer. That would make bicycling too much like exercise, like something yucky, instead of being outdoor fun.

Well, I'm always injured in some way or other. :-(

I don't weigh myself every week anymore. It's too frustrating to see the fluctuations.
But I did weigh myself this morning, and while it's only a 2lb loss in three weeks, it has some significance.
1/3/2011: 201.0
1/27/2011: 199.0
I'm NOT applying for my emeritus status yet, as a single weigh-in doesn't mean anything - I could be back to 201 just by drinking a bottle of water, for example.
But DAMN, it felt good to look down and see a number that started with a '1'. I haven't seen that in 20 years.

I fully expect that when I see that magic "199" on my scales, the heavens will open up, and all the angels therein will shed tears of joy. And then someone from Publisher's Clearinghouse will arrive at my door with a camera crew and a giant check.
I'm not setting myself up for disappointment, am I?
