Commuting - La Jolla, Ca route Question?

Sorry if under the wrong section but don't know where to place it exactly this question. I was wondering if anyone know how to go from UCSD to Sorrento Valley. All the routes seems to go around in a huge circle just to get across. Any ideas?

Only two ways... depending on where exactly you are trying to go.

Either go east to Voigt to Campus Point, then north to Genesee then to the 5 north onramp (yes the freeway onramp) and continue north... there is a separate bike line on the onramp going north to Sorrento Valley. Be very careful. There are K barriers on either side (those cement things) that form the bike lane... there is lots of ramp construction in the area.

The other way is to go North Torrey Pines Road to the Coast and then go east on Carmel Valley Road, then south on the old Sorrento Valley road just before the hiway 5 bridge.

This is actually a very beautiful route, but also under construction at the Torrey Pines Bridge... The old Sorrento Valley Road is closed to auto traffic, so you get a break there.

The only other way is to go to Mira Mesa...

These really are not all that wonderful, due to the traffic patterns, the road construction, and the hills involved. There is another alternative, but it is all off road. Best to have a fully shocked bike due to the roughness of the trails.

Oddly enough, this means that cyclists have, in spite of bike lanes, and probably because of lousy traffic patterns, formed their own "Bike Paths."

In the lower part of the pic is a RR track that is paralled by several "Paths" and where the terrain and fencing and roads obscure the "Paths" they simply found a new route... keeping mainly to the low parts of the valleys, between the mesas.

It looks like bike path heaven down there to the right (east) of the major north south freeway.

This particular area is notorious for bad bike access... (note earlier thread question on how to access "the valley."

Close in pic shows the "Paths" and how the branch from one location after going under a freeway bridge. Note that these are "natural" paths formed by users that are "looking for a better way." Note that so many of these Paths parallel the only other road in the area, a freeway. There should be sanctioned bike Paths here... sigh.

Thank you for your help. I would try to go on the freeway but the rain today. So weird.
