Dang, I hope that one guy is ok. What really sucks is, what if they really got lost. in the mountains. And really couldn't find way home D: and then someone steals there bikes while camping.

Maybe in Cali, but people are honest to a t in Japan, and many other places around the world as well. When I was travelling around Europe by bike, I never locked my bike and would leave it in unlocked storage rooms in hostels w/o anything getting stolen. The rooms had no door locks and I could safely leave valuables there.

wow, I wish people wouldn'y steal hear. I have to lock my bike up very well.. I even use ball bearings that have been magnetic for my bolts.

Yeah, same here. But this isn't a perfect world, some people are genuinely bad.

well.....

Some people don't put hold any intrinsic value to goods, and some people are junkies. Its pretty binary to say that people are just "bad"

I'm surprised at all the positivity towards this, it really doesn't seem all that impressive to me. They went on a supported tour through a beautiful country. I think that this is awesome and it's something that I would love to do but I don't think that there is anything particularly "epic," about it. Now if this had been a self supported tour on fixed gears that would have been much more interesting/impressive to me.

I think it was supported in the sense that maybe some new parts were paid for (Cinelli), helmets (Specialized), their airfare, etc. I'm not sure if a van followed them from Tokyo to Osaka.

Money is just money. They still had to ride 400 miles on their own.

Thanks for the link. Didn't know the full video was up.

Really? You're not sure whether they had a support car?

Because I definitely don't see any racks, or panniers, or any kind of cargo carrying ability at all except for a couple small backpacks. Most of them don't even have saddle bags.

So either they had a support car, or they'd have to call a cab when they get a flat.

No, they had a support car, which housed the camera crew etc.

I can agree that it's not really "epic" but it still looks like a lot of fun, support cars or not

I totally agree and stated that I would love to do something similar. That being said I saw this at the BFF because I had a pass for the whole event. I think my negativity is because I could have happily not watched this, but part of the price of the pass was for this movie.

Ya know, most people who buy BFF tickets don't watch every single movie.

They just kinda, watch the ones they're interested in.

Just sayin'.

meh, it was in a series between two other movies that I wanted to see. It didn't make sense to just hang out in the lobby during this section

Nice video. I actually did the same trip this past summer on my own, though took the longer route as I did not take the ferry across. Basically had small backpack and a lock with me. It was the trip of a lifetime, didn't hurt that I got no rain at all, and I would love to do it again.

Ah yes, credit card touring. The most epic of all tours.

does not hurt that japanese atm cards can be used at any convenience store

That sounds so bad ass, I'd love to do something like this; solo or group.

I would LOVE to bike tour across Japan.

But the question is, would I love it more than all the other things I could do with $10,000?

Yeah, that's the rub. 10 years ago I did Ireland, Scotland and Wales loaded and unsupported. 7 weeks. Camped until I got tired of the grind then did hostels for a breather. I did it on the cheap and still ended up costing me 3000.00US including airfare.

Now here's a one day ride one may want to try: http://www.wqed.org/tv/its-pittsburgh/watch Somebody did it on fg this year. I think it was 45x22.

It's hard to believe that someone was riding up 30%+ grades, after riding 50 miles of hills, on 45x22.

Go to www.dannychew.com Click on DirtyDozen on the left. Then click on '2010 results' Scroll down to the 2nd paragraph and read the last 2 sentences. Your post is confusing, though. He rode up 30% grades during the race. The whole race is about 55 miles. See ya there in November, maybe? :thumb:
