Fifty Plus (50+) - Looking for a legitimate sounding excuse.....

......to add yet another steed to the stable.

A 2001 Rans Velocity-2 popped up at a very reasonable price. I don't have one of those yet, I don't need it, I don't have room for it, but I want it anyway.

I test rode a newer model back in 2007 and ended up with a Sun EZ Sport instead. I was quite impressed with both the Rans Velocity and the Rans Stratus, but as a beginner I felt a bit more comfortable aboard the Sun at the time. Now days I use the EZ Sport as a low speed neighborhood Cruiser and my higher end Tour Easy for longer rides.

My Tour Easy is above all the best ride I've ever had but it would be nice to have a back-up higher end bike, and this could very well be the one. I've been watching for a Stratus but the reviews I've seen puts the Velocity 2 at a slightly higher rating and again, the price on this baby is really very reasonable.

I have some small rumblings of a plan brewing in the back of my pea-sized little man-brain and I'm confident that if this bike stays on the market long enough I should be able to convince "She who needs to be listened to" that the world won't come to an end if I buy it.

Or maybe I'll just go out and buy it and to heck with the consequences....

Well we've got 2 DF's and two Recumbent bikes and thinking of adding a R-trike! The problem is we live in a "1 bedroom" apt. Luckly the wife doesn't mind a "bike" in the kitchen, maybe I can get a table top to fit it when it's not being used! ;)

Didn't one or two of the kids just graduate college? That frees up a lot of money right there.

Nah, that just slowed down the cash outflow a bit....

But really, the issue isn't so much the money as it is the 'Honey'.

Believe it or not, she seems to think that I have too many bikes. TOO MANY BIKES!! Who's ever heard of such a thing as too many bikes? How can I deal with such unreasonableness as that?

I can think of chaeper routes to a Divorce!!

I bought her diamonds for our 20th anniversary. She's spent the last 15 1/2 years trying to figure out what I was trying to buy my way out of!!

Sugar, you two been together that long, another bike ain't gonna do nuthin'. She loves you for what you are, and yer bikin' fever is part of that, no?

Maybe you could sell/donate some extra bike parts/supplies. Instead of n + 1 - 1.

Since you are already an expert at 'bent-riding, the higher bottom bracket should not be a problem for you and will help you to be svelte and aerodynamic.

The owner has answered my inquiries with a report that leads me to believe the bike is less than stellar. The seat has tears, the tires are shot, he's the third owner and the mileage is unknown. So now, like a good hunter, I just sit back and see what happens. He's already come down 18% in his asking price in just one week.

In this particular situation, procrastination is a virtue.

Well good luck and let us know how it works out. As for myself, I have all I want trying to keep up with two bikes. Just put tires on the Felt then ordered a new cassette and rear derailer, paid an entry fee for the Tour de Mesa ride and got two new lights, one for the helmet and one for the bar. Yesterday my garmin went missing on my ride. I seems there is always something.

Remarry. The right woman would be thrilled you bought something you wanted.

When the price drops so that you cannot refuse it- You know it was meant to be.

And if it doesn't drop enough- Sell the wife to get it.

There's your excuse: Everyone needs a back-up bike.

And note, there's a big difference between just having another bike and having a "back-up". I discovered this while riding with my wife, and she's (now) in 100% agreement. My "main bike" is a modern 10-speed with brifters. My "back-up" bike was 25 years old with 7-speeds and downtube friction shifters. Whenever I rode the "back-up" bike my wife complained that it's very hard for her to match my cadence or stay with me on rollers, because I shifted less frequently & tended to power up hills in bigger gears than I would on my "main bike". Eventually I explained that the old bike isn't a substitute for the new bike, it's an alternative, and hence the experience of riding it should be different. Therefore, it's not a really "back-up".

She agreed. So now I have a "back-up" bike too!

I'd say that you need no excuse to buy a recumbent.

But then again, I say that as a divorced man. ;)
