Foo - Cheezies... Only in Canada You Say ?

Pity.

Canadians and those who have traveled to Canada can appreciate the fact we have something wonderful in Canada that you just can't get south of the border... unless you know somebody.

Hawkins Cheezies.

Delicious corn snacks seasoned with aged Canadian cheddar that are hard and crunchy and are, as the girl likes to say, what Cheetohs want to be.

Tonight we stopped at Trader Joe's and picked up a bag of their Baked Cheese Crunchies and put them head to head with some of the Cheezies I brought with me from Canada and although they are cheesy and crunchy, they came in second.

They don't have the same kick as Cheezies and they add buttermilk and butter to their Crunchies which gives them a smoother flavour and they don't have quite the same level of CRUNCH.

Now... TJ's Crunchies might save a Canadian in a pinch but I am still pretty happy I brought a nice supply of my favourite snack (which I plan to share).

I would like to know more about this Canadian food of which you are speaking. There are no Canadian restaurants or Canadian food stores in my area.

Apparently... ketchup flavoured potato chips are another Canuckistani specialty.

My local grocery just started carrying CRUMPETS! Also, Ginger Beer. :D They are looking into Horner's Custard, too.

Ginger beer is awesome stuff... especially after one has had surgery and is feeling a little nauseous from the pain killers.

I buy cheezies once a year to bait the mousetraps at a cottage we rent. The mice like them and they are quite brittle so the trap goes off as soon as the mice touch them. For eating I go with Miss Vickies Chips.

Crumpets are great with Cheddar cheese - make sure you grill them both sides.

Yeah, we have ketchup flavored potato chips in Virginia, so Canada doesn't have the market cornered. Now throw some mustard flavored potato chips my way... mmmmmmmmm that would be tasty.

Originally British (knew them as "pikelets" when I was growing up), like a chewy pancake about 3" diameter with vertical bubble holes that accumulate melted butter etc. They are available here in Ontario.

pancakes, basically (there is a continuum from 'english muffin' to 'pancake' that crumpets are somewhere along)

Anything that goes with beer will prosper well in the Great White North.

Is ginger beer more a Canadian thing? We've had Reed's available here forever. A couple of years ago a boutique soda shop opened up downtown so we get a few more. Regatta's my favorite.

Mmmm, that's what I'm talkin' about. I'm not too fond of jalapeno chips, but hot sauce chips sounds amazing.

I have two four-packs of Bundaberg Ginger Beer ready to go for Australia Day (while it is currently the 26th down under, it won't be here until tomorrow). I like it better than Reed's.

Yeah, Reeds stuff is too hot. Never had Bundaberg. I think I'd like Barritt's but I've never had it straight, only in fancy drinks in exotic locales.

Miss Vickie's chips are the shizzle... especially the aforementioned sea salt and malt vinegar chips.

I just go with the straight sea salt Miss Vickies. They are chunky - remind me of the crisps I used to eat in England that came with a little twist of salt in blue wax paper - always sitting at the bottom of the bag!

Tom, try adding some dark rum to the gimger beer, makes for a nice summer's day or any time libation.
