Evening peeps,

I have a list of things I wanna do on this earthly plane before I leave and completing a triathlon has always been in the top 10, along with twin redhead cheerleaders, Gillian Anderson etc.... but at least this one is achievable!

So have taken the plunge, entered the super sprint in Tatton Park in September 2011 and am going to the gym doing RPM/Spin classes and hoping to start doing some roadwork in the next week once I procure a set of wheels.

Status Quo:

36 years old, 18 stone, 175cm high, ex PE teacher who now owns a Hot Tub and exercise pool business, (you may have seen one of my pools in TRI UK if you ever venture in there, I don't exercise much, hate the gym but like having goals to work to and prefer getting fit as a by-product of doing something I enjoy rather than being on parade in some David Lloyds.

Am looking to be steered in correct direction as to training, purchasing of said bike, kit etc.....

Bike:
Not bought a TT/triathlon bike yet but have been looking in china and over here, is a road bike best way to go to begin with then splash the cash later, or spend as much as I can afford right now (probably up to £2500 on everything)

KIT:
I also face some quandaries in terms of buying a suit in that if I buy one that fits me at moment then presumably with training between now and september body shape will change to something resembling human/fit! Can I get away with training without a suit till race time?

Heart race monitors, are Polar still the best, are these nike watches any good?

DIET:
at the moment I don't eat a lot but what i do eat is normally on the go as I have a long commute everyday (too long for bike, I have thought of it)

If you imagine I know sweet FA, then deduct a few IQ points, you will have a reasonable idea where I am with this at the moment.

All help gratefully accepted

Mac

For a sprint tri...

any bike will do. I'd suggest a road bike if you're not sure whether you'll stick with triathlon.
you don't really even need a kit for a sprint, but I'd just get some cycling shorts for now and pick up a new outfit sooner to the race, if you want something different. Just practice in it a few times before. With sprint times being shorter, you may want a one-piece.
I use a Garmin HR system, so I can't comment on Polar.

I'd suggest trying something like a couch-to-5k program to get you started. Beginnertriathlete.com also has some good "couch to sprint" plans.

Good luck!

Another option, like the one i did was just quit trying....just kidding....i went to my local college and signed up for a triathlon class.....shows you techniques, which if applied well you will and should be able to finish a sprint within a very comfortable time.

ok, so on the bike front I have had a couple of bikes catch my eye on ebay, are these out and out tri bikes or road bikes with tri bars?

Would appreciate any thoughts on this, I am 5 ft 9 inches with an inside leg of 29 inches

Cheers

I am planning on doing my first triathlon this summer and just bought a new road bike. I'm doing a sprint so I may not even bother with aero bars. Of the 3 events, my favorite is bicycling, so I figure I'll get a lot more use out of a road bike than I would a tri bike. Besides, if I end up getting way into triathlons I can always add a tri bike to the stable down the road... :) and a 29er for the off road tris...

How are your swimming skills? When I hear about first tri disasters it is most apt to be the swim that does someone in. That does not mean you have to be fast in the water, just reasonably comfortable.
