I'm throwing a small surprise 50th birthday BBQ potluck party and a majority of the guests will be guys. I mean, we are talking 40 guys and probably four women.
The things the guys are offering to bring are:
booze
desserts
I'm supplying the meat and the booze already as well as airfare for those coming from out of town.
I asked one guy to bring a warm vegetable dish and his text in reply was: "And what would that be? Lol"
:twitchy:
I just need some suggestions on what to tell these guys to bring that they can actually make without too much fuss. Something edible and not just finger food.
Please help. The party is this Sat.
Put out pulled pork and hot dogs, those will be some happy campers.

Salad - there are prepackaged bags with all of the ingredients, including dressing
Corn on the cob - can be microwaved or grilled
Garlic bread or breadsticks
Spanish rice or wild rice - Uncle Ben's makes microwaveable packages
Roasted veggies - chop up fresh veggies (or buy frozen pre-cut), toss with olive oil, salt & pepper, roast at 450 F for 40-50 minutes, stirring 2-3 times

Pre- order from Whole Foods and make them pick them up and pay for them. Warn the guys not to veer from the order, or else (then show them your knives).
some really good hot sauce.
like sriracha hot sauce in a bottle.
and some tabasco sauce for milder.
Anything on the back of a can of campbells soup or the back of a box of Jello.

Other non cooking stuff. Chips, Soda, chip dip, desserts, Ice cream etc. Sometimes I go to the store and buy a finished cake or pie.
That's all I could handle.
Cheese ball/sliced cheese and crackers, chips and salsa, vegetable kabobs.

You are paying airfare for the guests to come to your party?

Throw a pork loin in a crock pot with half a two liter of root beer. Cook for 8 hours, pour off the root beer, shred the pork with 2 forks, add bbq sauce to taste, done. Guy proof.

Guys can usually manage baked potatos or buying potatosalad or cole slaw at the local market.
a platter of sliced tomatos with capers & olives sprinkled with balsamic vinegrette is an easy vegie dish

Pasta salad isn't hard to make either. Cook some pasta, slice up some black olives, carrots, broccoli, whatever, toss with itallian dressing. Sure you can make it better, but that's quick and dirty. Also rolls from the bakery. Can't have too many good doughy rolls.

Chili. Guys love to make chili, it's easy to transport (unless they're flying), easy to serve, and most of us like it. You'll probably end up with more meat in it than you're looking for, but I bet you'd get fewer blank looks if you asked for chili instead of veggies. Leftovers shouldn't be a problem either, just like leftover beer or pizza.

I say whatever they can get at the local deli - of course the food will be awful. Best to tell guys to bring chips... well that's about it. If someone is a foodie and can cook, then they can bring something nice. Asking any guy to bring a "warm vegetable dish" is like asking me to tune a bike... ain't going to happen!

This gal has deep pockets unless it's a political fund-raiser for her campain.

guacamole is a vegetable right? not warm, but I say it counts. and someone else can bring tortilla chips, cause corn's a vegetable. so's salsa.
There is going to be 4 tired women:innocent:

I am really disappointed in the guys you know.
I don't know what you would call this but the ex taught me how to make it, it goes good with everything and I can never get enough of it. Some kind of macaroni salad.
Get 2 white onions, 2 or 3 jalapeno peppers, 2 or 3 tomatoes, finely chopped cilatro, limes and mayonaise.
Chop and dice everything up, basically making a giant pico de gallo
Boil up a bag of elbow noodles, then throw everything in, dollup in the mayonaise and squeeze limes in to taste.
This is real easy to make just increase the amounts of everything for the large crowd. I think any of the guys in the crowd could be able to bring a large serving bowl of the stuff.

Any chance of getting a grill to the party place? Every guy thinks he's a wizard on the grill. And if you're providing the dead animal flesh, that sounds like a good time waiting to happen.

Wow, you all came up with some good recipes!! I'm going to send some of them off via email and see what they think. And yes, we will be using a grill, that is why I'm getting the meat. Tri tips and pork ribs. Getting oysters on the half shell.
Got one guy to get sodas, one of the ladies offered to make teriyaki chicken but then she wrote to me and said she is going to just buy a teriyaki chicken platter from the Hawaiian BBQ restaurant. One person is having their wife make sushi, another lady is going to make pancit. :)
Yes, I am paying air fare for a couple of the guys. They moved down south for work and this is going to be an over night thing for them. It's Sat night and they have to be back at work Monday. It's a 50th birthday party and these are the guys that he grew up with. It was really hard trying to locate everyone for this but so far everyone is going to attend except for one person. :D
I still have to make that Costco run.
Thanks everyone!
