I've had enough. Enough lurking. Enough posting and running like a guerilla in the mist. I realize now it's time to come clean, to emerge from the shadows, to make everything whole again.

Allow myself to introduce...myself.

I'm currently a med student at the University of Pittsburgh. Before moving to Pittsburgh four years ago, I lived in Durham, NC while attending college. I have only really become an active biker over the last year and a half. Despite my best efforts, I can't quite transition to the car-free life as the demands of my schedule sometimes make biking unpractical. But there's nothing like the magic of an early morning ride to the hospital before everything wakes up (even the patients!): wheels whirring on the pavement, LEDs lights flashing wildly, the road quiet and free.

When I first moved to Pittsburgh, it struck me as an unfriendly bike town. The roads are narrow and poorly designed, the drivers poor, and the weather gloomy much of the year. Once I learned my way around the streets and the strange driving behavior, however, I soon came to appreciate the city as a great place to ride. The many hills force even casual commuters into shape. There are river trails where families can ride together. Bicycle crime is *really* low. Rent is cheap, so it's easy to find a place near a grocery store/theater/book store/coffee shop/etc. and minimize car use. And after you find that cheap apartment, you can easily ride to Frick Park for some nice singletrack right in the city!

Now, as I apply for a residency, there's a pretty good chance I'll be leaving for another city. Until then, I'm just going to keep on keepin' on. Maybe I'll see you on the road sometime -- I'll be sure to give you a wave or a nod.

Even if you're too cool/in-the-zone on your fancy Lycra roadbike to wave back.

Welcome to the forums latortilla! You think the Steelers are going to do anything this year?

I spent 5 years in Pittsburgh, (Bethel Park & Dormont). Awful hilly, narrow roads - not a bicycling hotspot. Ohiopyle to Confluence was the best ride and Lake Arthur was second best. The people were nice, but the geography was too tough.

Pittsburgh! Born and raised.

I used to really enjoy mt Oliver and mt washington (both accessible from the southside). Really cool views. Steep intense hills. Good for your lungs. Enjoy !

Fun short scenic ride: From Carson Street, go up up up south 18th street. At the top, you can keep going and go to the south hills suburbs. Or turn right at the bank (near big clock). Go down the hill, and make left at the park. Follow the road to Saw Mill Run (51). Take a right in front of the red white and blue thrift store. Continue past entrance to tubes (don't ride in tubes). Take the next right and go up the hill follow the road to the top of the hill. From here you can go down the hill and get to the other side of the tubes and have have access to downtown or the south side.

To Gus:
They've had a pretty good year so far, though most of their wins have come from teams with losing records. The encouraging signs of good things to come are there: a renewed commitment to running the ball, the revitalization of our secondary defense, the emergence of Big Ben as a rookie quarterback. If we get some more experience under the belt, I think the team will be tough to beat this year.

It will be interesting to see what other teams do to try to derail our offense as the season continues. Speaking of running the ball, have you seen Jerome Bettis' stats for the season? Incredibly low yardage, career or near-career number of touchdowns.

But enough about the boys in Black and Yellow. Who's your team, Gus?

To H23:
Thanks for the ride suggestions. I'll have to give them a go and see how the old cardiopulmonary system holds up.

To Applehead57:
I used to think the same as you, but I've grown to enjoy the hills and the challenge of finding cool routes to where you want to go. How else do you think I forged these thighs of steel?
