Foo - persecution
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

so has anyone else tried to sell their car in exchange for a bike and gotten a lot of **** from family and friends? Cause I'm selling my car to buy a bike and that's all of I've gotten so far...

Sounds like you need to find new family and friends.
I think we here at FOO will do just fine. :D
If you end up leaning on them a lot for rides then they have a point. Keep track of $ saved. They'll understand that, and perhaps rethink their closed-mindedness.
I commend you. I think about the carfree thing once in a while. Like the many instances of late where I need to take my 80 year old mom somewhere. That'd be a hard sell if I were sans car.

I dumped my truck (it was our second car, my wife still has/needs one) three years ago. We were paying a bunch of money for a vehicle that we weren't driving and couldn't keep once we had kids. It barely fit in the carport, was a pain to park, and had outlived its usefuless for us.
I am pretty sure my dad will never understand... but then, he has a car and a truck just for himself and Mom doesn't drive.
There are a lot of people who just don't get the concept of not having a car at one's disposal at all time. Recently, I had taken a car-share car to the ear doctor. He was running late, and I had to cut him short so I could get the car back on time. (The appointment was a waste of time and co-pay anyway.) He looked at me like I had lobsters coming out of my ears (all puns intended!).
Or when I make my one early trip to church a month by bike and my wife comes on-time with the car and the bike rack. You would think I'd shown up dressed like Old Gregg, green paint, seaweed, tutu, and all.
It isn't so much "persecution" as a lack of perspective or not being able to conceive that people can live in a different manner. And this is the Bay Area.
No but couple of years ago I had renters insurance & car insurance with the same company. The insurance agent could not resist and asked how come my main and only car is worth $500 bucks while the bike is over a thousand... :P
I told him the the bike gives me far more miles per banana... :o

(Heh, Ruben, my father-in-law only buys beater cars under $500. He can't understand why my "cheap" bike, "cheap" guitar, "cheap" laptop, and "cheap" snowblower each cost more than his cars--which only last a few months at a time, by the way.)

The part that I don't understand is that I'm constantly offered unsolicited rides from family and friends that I turn down because I'd rather ride my bike. I was given a car from my sister and brother in law that I fixed (needed a complete upper motor gasket re-seal, head gaskets, upper intake, etc.) and although I fixed it over 3 months ago I still have yet to get plates and insurance on the car and ever drive it. In your situation it would be pretty tough to live car free. I would consider keeping mine except that I need to sell it to get the bike that I want.
I can't say that I disagree lol.
I've been encouraging as many of my friends as possible to ride with me instead of driving when we go out to at least give it a chance but I really only have one friend willing, most likely just because he lost his license haha. Coming from my end I find myself somewhat surprised at how dependent people are on their cars, and even how much so I was in the past. I love the reference to Old Greg too btw lol. I'm so creeped out by that video.
RubenX and SonataInFSharp,
Pretty much lmao at your comments especially "I told him the the bike gives me far more miles per banana..." haha

I wouldn't give it a second thought. If there is nothing going on in your life that requires you to own a car, you're doing better than the rest, regardless of their excuses or reasoning. Carry on.

Well, it's official now. Put the car on Craigslist yesterday and sold it this morning. Now it's over to the bike shop for a cycle upgrade.
You can always buy a mini MG later on.
the suspension in that was designed by Alex Moulton, who also does bikes.
