View Full Version : Locks
I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for a lock. I am aware that if people want to steal the bike they will do whatever it takes but sometimes you just need to lock it up. Thanks alot
It depends on what you are locking your bike to -- bike rack, telephone pole, tree, etc.
If it is something large you'll need a chain. For smaller things a U-lock will generally work.
I have a Kryptonite U-lock that I use at work. I lock my bike to one of the heavy duty shelves in the warehouse.
Most good bike shops carry Kryptonite and maybe a few other brands.

I saw the ad for a new bike lock by Masterlock. It looks like a pair of handcuffs. Has anybody tried this lock?
Cables or chains can be cut through pretty easily. If you'll be near a bike rack than u-locks are the way to go, that way you require at least a little skill on the part of the thief. Keep in mind, though, that an experienced thief can make short order of most locks. I try not to leave my bike unattended very long.
I keep a Kryptonite U lock attached to my bike rack at work, and have a cable attachment for it too.

Kryptonite U-Lock and Allen-Key Skewers.
It won't stop a determined professional but will hopefully stop the opportunist. The only negative thing I can say about the U-lock is the weight - I keep thinking of getting a lighter weight lock to carry on the bike and leaving the U-lock at work, but then I'm not sure whether I'd be happy with a lesser lock if I park the bike in town for an hour at the weekend...
