What is the difference between the $200 9-spd cassettes and the $30 9-spd cassettes? I know stiffness, weight, and...? How can this possibly be worth it, what am I missing?

In Sram world it's approx 375 grams vs approx 175 grams
200 grams is the difference.
And the fancy one has way bigger holes in it. Not worth it to me, but... some people have the dough.
You can probably stop considering difference in stiffness for this part.

Some of the entry level cassettes are really heavy (more than the 375 indicated above)...so it's an easy way to lose a bunch of weight. Cassettes are much cheaper on eBay so you don't have to pay the MSRP premium.

Price point says the PC 950 is only 260 grams, but I don't believe 'em. I'd weigh one, but I only have 8-speed around here.

I would personally go for some of the cheaper ones as long as they aren't the really heavy ones. The really light ones are usually quick to wear out.

I can't recall exact numbers but I think I've had some 11-34 Deore cassettes weigh close to 500g.

I have a 9 spd drivetrain and I buy the SRAM 950 cassette because of the price. I need to lose a few pounds on my belly before I consider losing it on the cassette.

Yeah the HGxx 9-spd cassettes (spec'd on many bikes in the $2k range) are tanks. I dropped a lot of weight by going to an XT cassette and it was only $99 at that time. OP, you don't need to spend $200 on a cassette.

I will stick with my 60 $ shimano XT 9spd cassette , and 8spd on my other ride no matter what they weigh..

XT or SRAM 980 are plenty light enought for me for $60 or so

I have had problems with the cheaper cassettes wearing out faster. I find a good mid-line SLX, XT or SRAM 980 all about 60.00 tend to last much longer than 2 of the cheaper ones

The cheaper ones will muckle up your freewheel splines on an expensive wheelset pretty quick. I'd stay away from steel carrier ones if I were you.

Here's some weights from weight weenies, I think really all you are buying is less metal, law of dimenishing returns is strong on this part.
