Recreational & Family - A bit of a relic, just purchased for a friend: Dawes Countryman

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hiya, my friend wants to start cycling to work this spring, but is not a confident cyclist. I don't think she quite has the hang of it yet. So anyway, I know she wanted a bike she can stand over without injury, so I had a hoke around and found this locally and got it for her tonight.

It is a Dawes Countryman, circa ? 1988? and needs new tires (it has monster tires from Holland on it) but basically, it is just what I was hoping to find. It has flat bars, and thumb-side shifters. It has a small frame (18 inches?), mudguards, a rear rack, and okay pedals. Oh, and bonus: there's a kick-stand! The flat tires meant I wasn't able to test drive it, but the gears shift smoothly and the brakes seem to work.

Best of all, look at the spec of the frame!

I can't wait to try it out once it gets the once-over and some new tires from my LBS!

I guess this is some sort of early hybrid touring-slash-mountain bike from Dawes? The front fork is something I have not seen before. Has anyone here ever had one? I was familiar with the Galaxy, but have never seen this defunct model.

Brought it into my bike shop today and my mechanic approves. He said you can't get a Reynolds frame for what I paid for the whole bike. He pointed out that it has a long wheelbase, which I hadn't noticed. He agrees it was worth getting and worth spending a few quid on to make roadworthy. It is getting new tires, cables, and brake pads on the rear (front ones are fine, more modern replacement pads have been fitted). I can't wait to take this for a spin! :)

For some reason I thought the Countryman had a set of riser bars? I wonder if someone converted it? Looks good though. Good riding!
