Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Pittsburgh Fixed Gear Community

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I'm a Pittsburgh fixed rider, and I'm curious if there's any kind of community in the steel city like you see in some of the larger cities. I'm having a blast riding, but I'm the only person I know that rides a bike as more than just a way of getting to/from class, let alone rides a fixed gear.
Or I suppose if there's anyone interested in getting together to start it! :thumb:

Man, there's a huge fg community in da'Burgh. http://www.otbbicyclecafe.com might be a good place to start. Also, find out where all the messengers hang out as most of them ride fixed. I'd guess somewhere on the Southside. Meanwhile, enjoy this video. I posted it on another thread: http://www.wqed.org/its-pittsburgh/watch A 48 year old guy on a fg w/45x22 gearing completed this ride. Pittsburgh Pro Bikes is a solid lbs. It's in Squirrel Hill, someplace...can't remember what street.

thanks nashcomm! I've actually never heard of otb, or else I'd have been there already. I live in Oakland, so I mainly get my stuff from Iron City Bikes, but as soon as this snow melts enough to ride I'm checking out Pro Bikes for sure. Seems like it's just a straight shot down forbes.

I ride in the Dirty Dozen (www.dannychew.com) every other year, so I'll be there in November of this year. Lived there from 1993-2002 and owned my own window cleaning business. Almost every business in Oakland I served at one point or another. 'The Original' was a mainstay of mine. Try the french fries...they're epic. The Beehive in the Southside is a cool coffeehouse hang.
Also, there's a group of cyclists on the down-low that do urban assault pretty often, but you'll need a suspension mtb, because part of the route is .5mile of rr track crossties. I tried the rout on a hardtail stiff fork and almost vibrated my fillings out. Pittsburgh has some of the loosest, no bs, straight ahead cyclists you're likely to meet.
Get yourself plugged in and you'll be plenty busy. Between the hills and the bridges Pittsbugh's a cyclist's dream.
