It snowed here on the weekend. I put on winter tires and went for a ride on Sunday and rode to work today. Temp was -7c/21f. An excellent ride and I'm hooked on year round biking.

westman2003,
I'm in calgary too, was also my first winter ride. It felt great, I think I may have actually OVER dressed for the weather. Doesn't take long to warm up cranking those legs.

Sorry no pics. I'm still in the 90s from a techno point of view (no digital camera).

Glad to hear from another Calgarian! I live in the north (Hidden Valley, just north of Nose Hill Park across country hills blvd) and commute to SAIT where I work. Are you commuting and where is your ride?Anyway it was a fairly icy ride but the studded tires worked great. Someone was ahead of me as I could see fresh bike tracks so glad to see there are other crazy's out there. Total commute was 13km and I feel awesome. Best of all everyone in the office walks up, stares at my bike (I park it by my cubicle), stares at me and shakes their head.

I love it!

I live and work in the chinook area. My commute is quite a bit shorter, under 5km. I also park in my cubicle and was told I'm crazy twice. I just told them that this is considered summer where I'm from (northern ontario).
I don't have studded tires yet, so I just took it easy this morning. I saw 2 or 3 tracks in front of me, usually 2 or 3 bike commuters meet up at a glenmore trail intersection, didn't see anyone this morning though. On a side note, my dad is an instructor at SAIT in the business department I think. His name is Rick Hone, maybe you know him.

This morning was my first commute in the 30's (36F/2C). My new Pearl Izumi AmFib's kept me toasty warm. I was a little on the warm side, so they can deal with a lot colder than this. I did discover I need new gloves, though. My warmest gloves have a tear in them. This is something I'd rather discover when it's 36F, not 6F (-14C)/

Hey there Calgarians. Just wondering how you guys do ride. Do you stick to bikepaths or do you ride on the roads. I am a little freaked out to ride on the road but I can't stand driving.

Fellow Southlanders (Calgarians),

We got over 20cm's of snow on the weekend and another 10 cm's today. The commute to work today was awesome. I have Nokian extremes in the front and they worked great. I was slipping a bit in the rear and thought it would be wise to out studs on the back. My wonderful wife picked me up at lunch time to pick another Nokian extremes for the back. Good thing because the evening commute was much worse. Nokians Rule!

BTW here is a picture of me after the ride (note the sleet in the background - hate the stuff)!

my commute follows quiet residential streets about 75% of the ride, the rest is either on the shoulder or on the sidewalk.

jasoncd, way to battle the weather up north! nice pic
