Northeast - There are still people riding in this

There was one lone person on the Manhattan Bridge tonight on the way home and it wasn't me. I was on a B train. The path is cleared but still pretty sloppy. Manhattan streets are really sloppy as the plows keep pushing the snow out into the driving lanes to melt it. There were a couple of die hards in the streets, but mostly delivery guys.

There is a hardcore Brooklyn commuter on these forum.
Adam commutes year round, I think he even uses studded
tires on his bike to have more control in the snow.

I didn't put on fenders this winter and it just seems too sloppy to ride without them.
Hope the streets clear up soon or it's going to be a very long winter :(

Saw a guy fall off his bike tonight when he must've hit a pile of slush... frozen and otherwise.

Willy B was plowed around 7:30 am, but there was still ice on it. I still rode but I have fat tires with steel spikes. It scares me when I see someone on skinny tires in this weather. And fenders are a permanent fixture on my Kommuter MkII ;)

Worst ride so far. Ice, sludge, water. The crews were just preparing a spreader so hopefully it'll be better later. The middle span of Willy B completely covered in smooth ice, lower spans: chunky and crusty ice. I saw two other cyclists during the entire commute. One is an older Chinese guy I see every day that seems to be completely impervious to any type of weather and uses some kind of magic to keep his bike upright in all and any conditions. I was able to ride over the bridge thanks to my studs. The third guy had hard time and gave up and started to walk which was very difficult too.

Oh, I missed your post :) Yeah, that would be me :D People at work don't even ask anymore "did you ride today?!". It has become part habit, part addiction, part "Me v.s Mother Nature" affair.... and I really hate subways. I skipped one day, the first snowfall after Christmas because the snow was few feet deep, streets were not plowed I would have to carry my bike through knee-deep snow to the main streets and even those were in bad shape, so I had to draw a line somewhere and I stayed home that day. Then I was off for a couple off weeks in January so I didn't commute but I did laundry and shopping by bike because I didn't feel like digging my car out and dealing with all that crazy nuts traffic.

The studs help with ice and very hard packed snow, but not really with fresh snow or anything in between. That's where the size of the tires and big knobs help. My studded tires are 2.0 and knobby, like off-road, dirt tires but I wish I could get fatter ones. I think Nokian or Schwalbe makes 2.2 studded tires, I might get those for next Winter. The current tires I have are the cheapest studded tires: Continental Spike Claw. Not bad, but the steel is harder and the compounds are better on the Nokian and Schwalbe tires.

Plus, I keep my center of gravity low, first by riding a 26" bike, second by carrying stuff in low hanging panniers, weight distributed evenly around the bike.

BTW, I ride from Maspeth, thorough Williamsburg, take Grand Ave to Willy B then 1st Ave up to 30th Street, black MTB with gray panniers on the front and back, yellow striped reflective tape on the panniers and now a black crate strapped to the rear rack. It's the bike linked in my signature, except now it also has panniers in the front. So if you see me, say "hi!" :D Just don't startle me, LOL!!!!
