Foo - How is this called?

I watched this in a couple of movies. The guy is on the ground, with a harness and a bungee cord. The cord is lifted (balloon or between 2 towers), then a plane comes and grabs the cord with a grappling hook... and off you go.

I think there was an episode of 24 hours where they showed this as well...

Anybody know how this is called? any video linky?

The USAF did it with C-130s... I guess until 1996.

Almost as cool as picking up re-entering rocket payloads in flight or landing on an aircraft carrier, two other little-known C-130 jobs.

I would've guessed the drag-skip-bouncy-ouchy maneuver.

Well, you'll either need to build a time machine and join Special Forces... or get one of those C-130s and a weather balloon (to strap to yourself).

Well, they did some tests with the C-130s to see if would be feasible to land on the carrier. It wasn't. It worked... and they did it a few times, but it never became a real option or tactic. So, you can't really call that a C-130 job.

But the video of them testing the concept is pretty cool.

And the C-130 does do some very cool stuff!

Yeah, I rounded up for brevity. But you have to give the Navy some credit for thinking outside the box, testing it as a COD plane like that.

It was actually very doable. They were able to land without a tailhook and take off without a catapult at 130,000 pounds gross weight (about 30Kcargo weight).
