You know, they aren't mutually exclusive. ;) Dog people can like cats and vice versa. Cats are just different in behavior than dogs are, and viva le differénce!
my cat is cuter.
but I dislike how it manages to get fur in my eyes and mouth and nose.
oh well, that's what happens when they try to sleep on your head.

Don't fall for their furry cuteness and purring and stuff. They're still pure evil. If you want a test, just leave your coat on a chair or on the floor. It won't be more than a couple of hours before it's been scratched up and peed on. Go ahead, I dare ya.

No, his brother is evil! I once tossed my dog Vic a nice piece of cooked chicken, and while Vic sat there waiting for the chicken to land in his mouth Promo (Bobbys brother) jump up and flew through the air between Vic and the piece of chicken, snatched it right out of the air with one paw! landed on the other three! and ran in the basement (using just three legs 'cause he was holding the chicken in the one paw!) to enjoy his victory! I should have named him Ninja! LOL!

Cats all have very different personalities. When my wife and I got married, within a few years we had 6 of them. Two were awesome, the rest somewhere between ok and things to be fed. Now we have four. One of those is of the original 6. Of these four, they range from sometimes lovable to things to be fed. None are what I consider awesome. The one that remains from the original 6 is something to be fed.
What makes a cat awesome to me? It's when they do not realize that there is no difference between them and you.

Big Boy and Bobby are gorgeous! I am definitely a cat person and on occassion cats tolerate me enough to give them treats and general worship. But I would love a dog. I hear dogs are all about constant love. Intriguing.

are there any tricks to getting a good one? I've met a few cats that I liked but many more that would not be worth the effort of owning.

They pick you in a "when the student is ready, the teacher appears" sort of way. That may not make much sense to someone who spends a lot of time with analytical engineers, but that's the way it works.

I AM NOT A CAT LADY!!!
That said... have always had a feline companion... mostly males 'cause like all males, they tend to be sweet and silly.
I have been told that dogs are more intelligent than cats but cats are clearly more cunning and have a better sense of humor. My cat is really a constant companion, by my side if I'm home. He's loves to cuddle, he loves to play and he loves to just let me hold him. OK he also likes his "cat cookies" and can stand to lose alittle weight (he is a Maine Coon so he's big 16 lbs). Doesn't matter if your pet is dog or cat, both give hours of love and affection all for a pat on the head or some cookies! For me, alot cheaper and easier than a guy...

$64 dollar question. I have lived with cats that started out awful (mean and nasty) but turned into sweeter pies... I have also lived with cats that stayed evil forever. Look for males... neutered males tend to be sweeter and less territorial than females. Big Orange Kitties are really the golden retrievers of the cat world. I also like big brown and black tabbies... stay away from the asian breeds - although lovely they can be pure evil.

I've had three cats. Two were/are awesome. The third was nice but aloof.

I have a tiny male grey cat, Pluto, he's the cuddliest cat eva. Very vocal.
I have never owned a cat. My wife had two that predated me, but I never claimed them, even after we got married. They had their moments, but overall, I could do without cats. My lasting impression of cats from that period of time is that you do not feed cats, you load them.

Our cat just caught a mouse, and immediately sprinted with it to the tub, where he proceeded to beat the crap out of the thing. Go kitty!
(of course, we rescued the mouse).
I like cats, they're great pets, but I am tired of litter boxes.

My kind hearted daughter is now running the mouse in a box down to the shed out back. She didn't think I should just toss him out into the cold night and deep snow.

Awesome cat to me is when you look it in the eyes, and you know it's thinking "if I was a little bit bigger you'd be dinner. But since I'm not you can pet me".
Here's mine... two beautiful Birmans.

I guess I'm weird, I like cats and dogs, both.
I like both also. Except for the very first cat (which was when I was about 10) I've never had cats and dogs that did not get along. And that cat was an almost feral cat that had kittens in our garage. She would not let us get clsoe and freaked when the dog came near. Eventually she trusted us. She finally gave up and trusted the dog when she came back from hunting and found thatthe dog had bathed all her kittens.
Don't have any cats right now. Coyotes. The dogs would protect any cat of ours, but cats wander.

The Cat's Diary
Day 983 of My Captivity
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Bastards!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously ********. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now ...
