BMX - coaster brakes or direct pull?

sup y'all.

i havva choice here, i can stick with my direct pulls which are in the way if i wanna slap on some modifications on my bike(they're on the lower rear strut) or i can buy me some coasters. please tell me some facts. apparently only 36 spoke coaster hubs are available, which means new spokes, rims, and money. lost of money. can you people help me? fbm rider, haro, williams, or anyone else?

Almost nobody rides a coaster hub anymore. I have a couple of 48 hole coaster hubs that have been modded to freecoasters, but that is all they are anymore... freecoasters.

You basically are in the same position as a lot of people are finding themselves...
"I want to run smaller gearing, but I can't because my frame wasn't designed to allow it!"

So, do you really NEED smaller gearing? Why not simply get some good 3-piece cranks? A better wheelset? Do OTHER stuff to your bike, then when everything is about as kick ass as it can be, THEN GET A NEW FRAME! Go with one with brakes where they should be, and then you will be ready for the smaller gearing setup.

Just my 2-cents on it though - I get upgraditis all the time and now I just go 'whatever' what I have works and changing parts does not make me a better rider.

also, the direct pulls get in the way of me moving my wheel well in close to the frame. any comments?

I've been tempted to run a coaster brake just to see what I could do with it, does anyone make one that will hold up to freestyle abuse???

Odyssey and Nankai, although the Nankai is known for having the superior action.

well, not a coaster break for a bmx bike, but for a single speed road bike.

I was going to suggest the Suntour, but since it would be so hard to find one, I din't bother; and to make one a freecoaster, you would need to find a Suntour Unbrake, anyway.

if you wanna make a freecoaster for a road SS just get an old coasterbrake and modify it. it wouldnt be all that hard...depending on the kind of coaster brake theres an UnBrake that might work for it. ive got a few coaster brakes, but none i want to hack up!

The new 14mm is Nankai Street F/C hub happens to fit that description.
