General Cycling Discussion - Prescription Bike Glasses

Having difficulty finding a lens maker that will put a perscription lens into a set of riding glasses. Lots of companies make all kids of nice looking shades but getting them to put a perscription on a nice set of say, Oakleys is hard.

What I'm looking for are glasses that ride high since we are always craning our necks to look up. Viewing through the top half of the lens when it extends to the eyebrow would be ideal. This will help eliminate neck soreness. Contact lenses are not practical for me.

Has anyone tried to solve this problem? Is there a company that can put a far sighted perscription into a half frame frame? I can't be the first person to have this problem. Thanks in advance.

It may be more reasonable to find makers of cycling glasses that can fill a prescription. Yo can also check into trap shooting glasses for a "high on the face" fit.

A lot of people who weld for a living have their eye doctor make them lenses with the bifocal at the top and bottom of the lenses so it's possible.

Some manufactures have prescription inserts that fit inside the glasses and there are some press-on reading lenses that can be added to sunglasses. there have been previous thread on this subject, you should search the archives.

A friend of mine likes http://www.sporteyes.com/ . They're local to me (Portland, Oregon area), but I haven't dealt with them directly. My Bollé Parole glasses with prescription insert have been working fine for many years. I got them and the prescription insert through Nashbar.

I know Bret and have purchased sports glasses from him in the past. His shop is just around the corner from me and he's good to work with.

i use Rudy Projects with prescription lenses. the best part is, if i smash the lens, a replacement is only $20 (for life, i'm told, having never actually taken advantage of the offer). the initial outlay in cash was not small---$150 for the lenses IIRC, but my insurance covered it all. worth every penny.

I wear Oakleys with a prescription and have no problem with them. However I do not have the "bifocal" part because I can see the cyclometer and route sheets on the handlebar just fine without it. Kind of like holding the newspaper at arms length to focus.

This place does prescription glasses for all sorts of sports for rediculous prices. I bought a pair for biking from them. You have to know your pupilary distance and it takes a few weeks to get them though.

I got mine through my LES (local eyeglass shop). I chose some nice wraparound Ray-Bans (RB3364) with transition lenses. Hugs the head nice and tightly and good upper viewing when neck is craned. Bonus is that I can wear them at night or while not on the bike, say at a beach, etc. Multi-use is good as my "insurance" was only covering a fraction of one pair.

+1 I just recently had Brett at Sports Optical put my fairly strong nearsighted+astigmatic+presbiotic Rx into a pair of Rudy Project Ketiums, and they came out fabulously! No more contact lenses or Rx inserts for me.
