Single Speed and Fixed Gear Marketplace - Retrogression

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

You guys gonna start flippin pants or shorts any time soon? I been riding in basketball shorts and high socks and it's cool, but the weather is cold now.
If not, could you or anyone drop a line on where to get some good ones? Preferably domestically made, eco-friendly, small business, yaddayaddayadda...

Congrats on the storefront Scrod!
I know this probably won't be the case, but will your prices generally stay the same low prices we love, or will they rise to compensate the additional overhead needed to run the shop?
I was hoping just the opposite! storefront gives you more brands and a way to mark stuff up (in store) that doesn't have to compete with online prices. plus you get bike labor $ from joe schmoe who needs a saddle installed for $10, well that's how me, someone with no experience whatsover imagines it ;)
I am hoping this will open up things like "free shipping on orders over ___" though :D

Because there isn't a huge fixed "scene" around here and the fact that our shop is a little out of the way from downtown, I'm not anticipating a ton of walk in traffic. Instead, we'll be using the shop as a means to run the site from and do some repairs/builds/whatever.
Our prices have always been low and will stay that way.

So, when are you hiring...? I'm now super bummed I don't live on that edge of town anymore!

No way, Jose. I made Angie throw it in the dumpster.
The space is about 580 square feet with an additional storage room that you need to access from outside. I think it will be perfect.

Looks great, love the stone wall and wooden supports. Place will have some nice character once you fill it out with goods :D
Most every shop around here are generic strip mall storefronts =/
whoa I love the look. there's a shop here like that with a real similar vibe/layout and it's really great looking now that it's all cleaned up (it's just run by morons unfortunately)
is your store front going to be called retro-gression too?

That's precisely what we didn't want. I hate walking into a bike shop that looks like it fell out of an Ikea catalog.

Yes sir. We'll be getting in there to paint, do a little building out and have some plumbing work done right after the holidays so hopefully it won't take too long to get up and running.

That's really cool! Who's going to man the fort once it gets up and running? And are you going to offer repairs too?
Scrodzilla
12-23-11, 04:09 PM
The shop will be run mostly Angie and myself, with some help from a few friends - like it is now. We're not going to be full-service at the beginning because it will be a lot to handle with everything else going on but that will most likely change by spring.

Wow grats Scrod, the place looks really cool. I can't wait to see how it looks when you guys are done with it. It's just a shame that you're on the opposite coast and I will probably never have an excuse to visit. :P

Any idea when you'll be getting some more black Knog Boomer lights?
Scrodzilla
12-25-11, 10:22 AM
Not sure. Both of our Knog distributors have been out of them for some time. We may end up ordering a bunch directly from Knog once we get settled in our new home. :D

What's your current situation for taking orders and shipping stuff ? Would it be better to wait until after your move before ordering anything ? I'm talking in-stock stuff here.
Scrodzilla
12-25-11, 11:21 AM
We'll be closed from Tuesday to Thursday of this coming week because we'll be visiting family in Vermont so any orders placed then will be shipped as soon as we get back.
As far as the move goes, it's going to be a few weeks before we'll be in our new space because we need to have some plumbing work done and because our building is in the historic district, there are a bunch of hoops to jump through at City Hall regarding permits and such - but we'll be running as usual up to and throughout the entire process.

Yeah, well since USPS is closed tomorrow, you won't be able to ship until you return anyway. Also, USPS will be closed next Monday for the same reason.

Scrod, saw you have 722ts frames on sale again. Do you know the geo for the 61cm size, haven't seen it on your site or leaders. I know I've seen it somewhere here before but can't seem to locate it =/

Scrod, Placed an order on Monday night(assuming you wouldn't ship until you're back from Vermont), but I received a shipping notification, but still just says "Electronic Shipping Info Received"(which isn't unusual for RG packages for some reason). Just curious if it was actually shipped, or if you just packaged it, and it will leave your facility when you return? Thanks!

Angie got it out the door right before we left town. Whether or not USPS actually scanned the barcode is an entirely different story....

Great, thanks! I don't care much about the tracking, just wanted to know if it actually left. Most times your packages will arrive in 3-4 business days, so I know about when to expect it. It seems like your local post man/office sucks particularly bad at scanning packages in though.

12-29-11, 06:00 AM
My local USPS is the same way. My wife sells handbags/jewelry she makes online and I could probably count on one hand how many times USPS has actually scanned the package for tracking. It's frustrating having to explain it to customers and sometimes they don't want to believe you =/
USPS has to be one of the most mismanaged companies in the world. Everyone stateside has to use them for standard stamp mail (not a complaint, simply a benefit), they already have drivers in neighborhoods as it is (so delivering a package is no extra inconvenience when they're filling up my mailbox with junkmail, they've fooled a million ppl with the 'if it fits it ships' envelopes and packages and I've never been in one that wasn't grossly understaffed. On top of all that that somehow manage to bleed money ever year and have to make cutback after cutback. It's truly astonishing.

So true, the sad part about is the alternatives aren't that much better. UPS & Fedex ship packages with good tracking but are much more expensive and letters are laughably overpriced compared to USPS. My dad worked 15 years for Fedex and also ran a mail order business, one that he later retired from Fedex to do full time and never not once shipped an item with Fedex. Our regular UPS driver gave him hell all the time about it but he said the policies and theft/corruption he worked with while there he would never use them.
any update on the nmsw a23s?

I've had way more issues with UPS and Fedex than I've ever had with USPS, for what it's worth. USPS probably loses money because it has a lot more overhead than the other two, thanks to having locations pretty much everywhere. I'm happy having tax dollars spent on sustaining that level of convenience, frankly.
Velocity is closed until Tuesday so I won't know until then.
ty sir, let me know. whether I do a novatec build is starting to hinge a bit on whether I can get the a23s I want.
you said you do custom velocity build kits, just can't list them all due to the amount of them. I'd be interested on the price of an a23 to novatec with black laser spokes and silver nipples. I know you probably can't get your hands on silver hubs, but if it makes sense to do an all retro-g order I may just compromise and get black hubs.
bringing back that wheelgoods coupons for the new year would be awesome too :p
Hey Scrod, do you guys have a recommended hub for building up 24 or 28 hole KinLin xr-270s? I'm looking to build up a training/racing wheelset on a budget thats lighter than my stock Kilo wheels.
Can I have a coupon code? :D
Oh, and please don't kick my ass, but I (seriously, this time) decided on 75's.

Because we don't have a way of getting Novatec hubs in anything but 32h, I'm going to refer you to our friends at BDop (http://www.bdopcycling.com/Hubs-FGSS.asp).
Don't be afraid of the international shipping. They're pretty fast and the rates are decent.

The new 722 is going to be a limited edition, right? I'm considering leader for my next frameset, but I don't like the cutout.

I'm pretty sure Leader will continue making the standard version as well as the Heritage Edition.
