Folding Bikes - brompton's showing up strong - northeast commuters

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Not sure about NE US, but here in Central Florida, most bike shops never heard of a Brompton. The best I can get is "wow, nice, I heard about these fast Bike Fridays, your bike is awesome" on Critical Masses or similar rides.

If I stay away from where the "locals" hang out and hit the tourist area, it is not uncommon to hear "look, they have Bromptons here", typically with some kind of non-american accent.

I get more recognition and respect for my Brompton in South America (where there is no Brompton dealer) than in the SE USA. :(

I'm starting to see more folding bikes here in Seattle. The Brommie numbers are slowly increasing. Bike Friday has a regional advantage, though.

I see about the same number of BF as Brommie's in Boston. (Except for my apartment where we have 3 BF, 2 of which are mine :-P) Broadway Bicycle has been selling Bromptons for about half a year now.

On I side note, I'm in Taiwan today and ~60-70% of the bikes are folding bike (and presumably no name brands or Dahons, Giants, etc.) However, to my surprise, earlier today I saw someone riding around on a Brompton, didn't get a chance to ask him about it though!

I saw http://times-up.org/index.php?page=folds-up-ride a while back and I wished that we had one in Boston. I'm currently in Taiwan, but I'll be back a week from now. Let's plan something then.
