Classic & Vintage - how old is my dynohub? Questions about an early dynohub.

I got another dynohub, a nice 32H front one, which I overhauled successfully and am now idly trying to figure out exactly how old it is.

I know, there's a date code. And I found it, too. It reads:

4 5 6

which I figure I can interpret either as 4/56 or 45/6 or as just some random numbers.

But I also know these hubs changed little by little over time. This one has an oil port, a feature I've never seen on a front dynohub before. The dynamo-side face, where the electrical terminals are, is a dull matte colored stainless steel, just like on a DynoFour hub I have (which is dated 50 2).

So, my question for those of you who have dynohubs dating to the period 1945 - 1956: does mine sound like a '45, or a '56?

What side is the adjusting cone on? If the dyno side, with a notched adjusting washer, I'd say '45; if on the other side, '56.

IIRC 1945 was the first year for the GH6.

Here is a picture of one on the SA heritage site (http://www.sturmey-archerheritage.com/images/photos/pic-62.jpg), but it doesn't say what year that hub is.

If the date stamp follows the convention of the other Sturmey hubs it would be YY M(M)

Rudi, the Dynohub on my '49 Clubman has an oiler clip and a date code of 4 9 5 with spacing kind of like that.

Thanks, guys!

Neal, does your '49 hub have a bakelite face, or steel? Your 4 9 5 date would suggest mine is 45 6, but there's one on ebay now with a date that reads 10 5 4 which would argue the opposite.

GNA, it seems my adjusting cones is on the non-dynamo side, so I guess that nails it... unless someone changed the axle.

Here's my hub, after cleaning. It's really hard to make an automatic camera focus on shiny chrome.
