mtb shifters on my aero bars?

I've been trying to find a deal and/or a way to put shifters up on my Profiles (closed at the top like the centuries and airstrykes) and was wondering if I could just put some shimano compatible mtb shifters on there. They would have to clamp on, but they would be much lighter and just as "out of the way" as swift shift/downtube shifter set up. Anyone tried this or know why it wouldn't work?
