Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Best Road Bike Under 2700.00?

I am looking and would like to hear what some suggest is the best option under 2700.00 in carbon.

I want something that does not weigh 45 pounds like my current bike and allows me to draft in one of those pods that come flashing by me like I am setting still. I think I am going with one of these three, Madone 5.5, Roubaix, and Cannondale super six. I plan to ride all three and I am going to go with the best fit. I started at 324 pounds in November and now I am at 290. I think that 35 more pounds should give me a good goal to try a little faster bike, with the big plan of riding in the Great Pumpkin in October which is a 60 mile ride.

The one that fits, suits your riding style, from your local bike shop, and puts a smile on your face every time you ride it.

Sorry for the vague response, but that's the truth. Heck, I honestly wouldn't rule out steel or aluminum frames either. One of my favorite road bikes is steel, the other is a aluminum/carbon mix.

race geometry or plush/comfort/performance geometry? Race geometry, it's tough to beat the Cannondale Super Six. Comfort, the Synapse carbon is also killer. I'm a Cannondale fanboy though :)

Dehoff got it right, the perfect bike for me, or anyone else may or may not be the perfect bike for you. Our priorities will be different than yours. There's a ton of great bikes out there but the best one for you is the one that fit's you and your needs. Not mine. :)

I have the Spec. Roubaix Comp - love it. Thousands of miles at 300lb and not a single issue other than 3 punctures.

Options... Gunnar Sport. Great bike. Gunnar Roadie if you want the racy version.

Without knowing what you like, we're just guessing.

If you have not considered it, Titanium is a nice material to look into at that price point. No worries about wrecking and crumbling, can easily get a bike under 17lbs, no worried about a the finite life cycle associated with aluminum or unknown damage of a minor fall on carbon.

For $2700, there a so many great bikes. You really need to provide more information on your needs.

My own personal opinion is the Cannondale Synapse first then Specialized Roubaix. Probably get a little more bike if you can find a 2010 model.

I agree with the above. To give you another option, I ride an Orbea Onix with Sram Rival/Force, and I love it. It has been a great bike for me, no weight related issues and I'm just above 300. It climbs great, good handling and comfortable. They list for more than your price range, but I paid around 2,300 in 2009 and they can can be found for close to that now.

I'll agree with most of the others, there is no best option, it's a little like asking what is the best car for under $250,000. A lot of the selection process comes down to the type of riding you want to do, and whether a plastic frame is really ideal for that kind of riding.

I also agree with the previous responses. I now ride a Surly Pacer (built with 105 stuff) and love it. I just felt a need to take a step back from all the "latest and greatest" stuff. I also have a Surly CrossCheck with stock Tiagra stuff, and like it a ton. I have less in these two bikes than many have in wheelsets.. and ride them a ton with a smile on my face.

I just bought a Scattante CFR Elite from Performance for $1,799 (MSRP $2,999). Ultegra shifters, and derailleurs. 10-speed 105 cassette and a triple chainring. Even has carbon cranks. It is last year's (2010) model, but I'm pretty happy with it.

That said, I agree you need to look around and find what's best for you. Ride some and talk to riders. I would suggest you buy locally so you have someone to take the bike to for servicing. I would also suggest you have the bike fit after you buy it.
