In the cold weather I've been wearing two pair of warm socks with Gortex Socks on top. My feet are dry and toasty. I wore the same pair of gortex socks for military training and even when tramping through standing water my feet never got wet. All in all I'm pretty happy with them.

"SealSkinz" brand of waterproof socks over thick wool socks work well with my SPD sandals in cold (42F/5C), rainy, weather. That combination means that the return trip starts much drier than if I wore shoes. I suspect that combo will work a little colder than that, but I do have to wear rainpants to keep water from leaking in from the top of the SealSkinz sock & being trapped inside.

This is good information, thanks! I need to invest in a pair of shoes that I can get thicker sock in. I currently can only squeeze a thinner pair of thermal socks in my shoes. I am intrigued by the SPD sandal idea, but I don’t think It would work for most of the winter. My toes get cold quickly. I don’t seem to get good circulation to my feet when I ride.

The sandals are cold, the socks are warm. Sealskinz or Goretex (I think Performance has them. Sidetrak also probably). Not thick, but you still might want a little more roomy shoe for winter.
