Today I rode my mtb bike at 28.9mph. I tried really hard to push it through 29mph but just couldn't. :( I do feel the "burn" in the legs. This is the highest speed I've ever attained on flat road.. Consider my bike is 30lbs and I am only 5'7 145lb I believe it's quite a good speed...

The speed limit on the road is 25, don't know if they would give me a speeding ticket if I got caught. :D

What's the fastest you've riden on a mtb on flat roads?

I've hit 27 even. I was racing my friend on the bike path. It's fun to pass road bikers, and to just plain fly by anyone. I love the sound when i speed up. My back tire like "whurrs." God, it's just insane.

37km/h = 22.99mph
27mph = 43.452288 km/h
28.9mph = 46.51 km/h

My hardrock comp with semi slicks going down a steep hill on the largest chain ring. Still got smoked by my buddy on the road bike.

Notice the ones that are 50+ are all in kph. Fastest downhill was probably about 65kph and flat about 40 i think, not sure since i dont have a speedo on my bike anymore.

Flat = 36 mph.
Down a hill Ive gotten 52 mph (on a Giant Yukon with semi slicks, LOLOLOL), couldve pushed it but I was quite scared. Ive heard that if you maintain speeds like that the bearing in your freewheel can melt and seize up causing a lockup. That would SUCK!!!!

EDIT: This is all on concrete. On the trail my top speed comes in around 3 mph. :D

I plan on it, just so I know how long I have to walk back up the dang trail after my bike breaks down, and my chaintool breaks trying to fix the dang chain.

Then I'll post my fastest speed.. probably 15 mph or something lame hehe.

anyone know the fastes dh speed?

yeah some downhiller called Christian Taillefer rode down a ski run called 'the Flying Kilometer' in les Arcs france. He hit 212km/h (132mph) on a rigid bike that was made by peugeot.

i hit 35mph on a 30mph limit and passed a speed camera. Anothre great thing to do is to use your phone while riding. See if you get arrested!!!

Ive hit 37mph on a slight hill on this really old bike I have.....and during a DH race, I think it was 35, maybe 38. Dropped pretty fast because I crashed going that fast, and was clocked through the finish gate :D

I have done 30 on a flat road, 43 on a dowhill(speed limit was 25 and 35, respectively), so yes, i am guilty of speeding.

I have a friend who got a ticket for doing 60km/h in a playground zone(30km/h) on a bmx race bike. He also got a ticket for riding on the sidewalk. He's over 18 but because he was rude to the cop he got a no helmet ticket as well.

I got 39 mph (~62 kmh) on my mountain bike with Panaracer Cinder 1.95s going down a extremely steep, long local hill really spinning 42-11. It was exhilarating but scary :).

The friend I was with claims he can hit 50 mph and I believe him - it's an extremely steep hill that's famous for miles around here.

56 km-h on almost flat surface.. behind a bus though :P

Fastest on the solo in Friston forest was 42mph last year, but I was chasing a downhiller that left me dead. Mind you 53mph on the Tandem, but on a smoothish grass hill that is about 1 in 5 for 1/2 mile. Problem was, we did not know if the gate was open halfway down, so didn't really go for it.

I must really have the power, I've went 28.0 downhill and up I was passing cars lol and 40 downhill, a big hill. And I am 13 so I am probably good for my age right and on trails I am cautious so I go 14.6 for an average.

I hit at least 62 or 63km/h once. I was passing cars by the highway and the limit is 60km/h. Flat surface and no wind.

I already hit well over 80km/h downhill. But the hill is 300 feet high and 200 feet long, very steep. I did that on a Kona Stinky.

I dunno...Maybe I am just crazy or stupid or a lot of both, but I have never, ever been afraid at 40+ mph on a bicycle. I was giving it everything, sprinting on a downhill to get to 50+, right until it leveled out, and the best I could do was 43-44. I do get a little scared when going about 25-30 on a long downhill on dirt, when it goes from buttery smooth to wash-board braking bumps, however...

I think I sprinted to 33.x on my Stumphumper, once, and not for very long. Thats my flat road record on my MTB. On my roadbike I had a wicked tailwind one day and hit well over 30 with almost zero effort. Coming back I was literally lucky to break 9.

10-20-04, 11:06 PM
I'll let you know in a couple days when my speedometer gets here, but I think i've hit roughly 27-28 on flat, maybe 35-40 downhill.

There's one hill I can think off, it's not really very smooth, ruts and etc, but its pretty steep for about 1/4 mile. Enough to get maybe 30 on. I can probably hit at least 40 on a good paved hill

on flat, at a sprint on a mtn bike -33mph
downhill on trails -? afraid to take my eyes off the trail to look at computer
downhill on a road bike -57mph in a tight tuck drafting an suv (they're good for something)
skidmarks in my shorts from 57mph -priceless

We mere mortals can only gaze from afar at the master of bicycle speed.

http://www.canosoarus.com/08LSRbicycle/Bicycle%20Images/152%20in%20tow.JPG

"Olympic Cyclist and IRONMAN triathlon winner, John Howard set a 152.2 Miles per Hour speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah on July 20, 1985."

http://www.canosoarus.com/08LSRbicycle/LSR%20Bike01.htm

that is one helluva single speed.

I've touched 35 on a flat road, no wind, in an all-out sprint on my full-suspension...couldn't hold it for more than a few seconds.
My girlfriend knows a guy who actually did get a speeding ticket on his bike. Sad but true.

If memory serves me well, about 8 years ago or so, I hit 42 to 45 MPH on a soapbox derby hill at the park I was riding at. Front end started to shake and scared me pretty bad.

Around 50kmph on my department store bike shooting down a hill, then it level, then to a steep downhill. I caught air, scared my pants off. I landed it though. Luckily.
