My Shimano 105 equipped tandem had been shifting more-or-less like crap since I assembled it. I managed with its shifting idiosyncrasies for a while. Then I replace the left lever with a Campy Ergo which relieved the front-shifting trim issue but the back shifting was still consistently poor. When shifting in one direction on the cassette, it shifted fine. But, when reversing the shifting direction, I had to shift the lever twice to actually make the gear change and/or trim the rear derailleur a little to stop chain noise.

Prior to taking it out last Sunday I was examining the rear derailleur and it occurred to me that maybe the stock cable housing was on the short side, as it was still bending as it entered the preload adjuster. I had some new SIS cable housing laying around so I cut off a length of housing about 4” longer than the stock housing. Of course, I would now have to replace the inner cable too, as it would be to short.

After replacing the housing at the derailleur and the inner cable, the cable now had a much more gradual bend and a strait shot into the derailleur.

Viola! Problem solved! It shifted perfectly Sunday!

Never underestimate the difference that a fresh set of cables and housings can make. I shudder everytime I hear of somebody trying to make some kind of upgrade or conversion and scrimp on cables and housings to save literally a few bucks.

The funny thing is... the cable and housing were brand new! The bike has maybe 200 miles on it.
