Hey! I recently bought an early 80's track bike I was told it was a Panasonic but it had no labels, decals, markings, ect. Under the bottom bracket it's stamped: 8F15653. Great lug work & nice black finish. It's from the early 80's with "Sunshine" hubs, 48 x 16 gear ratio. The cranks are "Tourney". Great old Brooks saddle too!

But how can I tell what kind of frame it is? Anyone have any insight?

A Panasonic early 80's was my first track bike as well and was a pleasure to ride. I learned to ride on that bike. I believe the frame was Tange but thats all I can really remember.

You are correct. Tange tubing with double sided hubs(fix/free wheel) , chain tensioner, brakes front and rear , Araya rims, Nitto bar and stem(Pearl 10).

Hey oops forgot to tell you . it is the Panasonic Track 2000. The other models for the US was Track 4000 in red ( track racing ready) and PICS the custom Panasonic straight from the factory in japan.

The one I had was red and I don't remember that it had a hole in the front fork for a brake? It had Nitto bull horns. What a blast from the past, I wish I still had this ride. One thing I remember about it was that the headset would rock itself into center like there was some sort of notch in it. I also had a set of sew ups but after a while I strictlly used clinchers.

The Track 4000 did not have a brake at all, it was race ready. My head set did the same thing til I got Campy in 1987 Super Record group for it. It was the opposite for me Clincher the first year then tubulars the rest. Never again with clinchers..
