Alright here's the picture of it with ruler guide; 1 red line from the corner up = 1mm
Sorry I don't have my digital caliper here.

There's a lip on the inside.... I'm not sure if it's a clincher or not; I would just like some confirmation... The inside of the rim seems a bit shallow to me and there's some sticky residue (from old rim tape?).

A cookie goes to whoever guesses the rim.

I carry a spare pre-glued tire with me when I roll out on the sewups. You're not supposed to push it in the corners with one you've put on while on the road, but I've hit some pretty fast on a barely glued tire and lived to tell about it.

The change is usually faster than a tube patch operation.

anybody carry another roll of tufo orange tape to swap out on the road? since there wouldn't be any glue residue on the rim to help with the preglued tire. Plus that way you don't really have to worry about taking it easy, and the tape hardly takes any time. Just on the expensive side (but tubulars are an expensive option in general)

I'm not too sure I'd build and ride that rim.
It may be the light, but the brake track looks to have a lot of wear. I've had the bead peel off a Campy rim with seemingly less wear than that appears to have.

Tubulars provide the best performance and best ride. They are not a hassle once you get the knack of prepping them for mounting, and are much less prone to flats than comparable clinchers. It's been 4+ years since I last had a tubular flat on the road, but I've had numerous clincher flats. I've put the most mileage on tubulars.

Am I missing something? Never run sew-ups but I thought they had almost no lip at all. Like this:

Exactly. Therefore, the OP's question is unnecessary and the answer is obvious.

I flat about the same rate clincher vs. tubular but I run cheap sewups and run Mr. Tuffies in all clinchers so those variables could explain the parity there.

I usually only roll out on the sewups when the weather's nice anymore.

No one cares about your sig.

Is your huge sig a way of compensating for something else?

Yes it could be a type of coffee... Just get a blender and blend in some campy parts. NOS brew is the best. Lots of iron, gets the blood flowing. :thumb:

oh hi

i have a tubular question lol

acquired a neato mavic cosmic elite tubular wheel. it came with a tire already glued, but the valve barely pokes out the hole. cant even get my pump to clamp on it. im guessing since the rim is of the deeper variety it needs a tire with a longer valve. Or one of those valve extensions.............about those....i read a little about "removable valve cores" and i guess the tire needs that in order to attach a valve extender? how do you know if a tubular has that?

basically im looking at a few tubular tires in my price range, and either they dont mention in the description what size valve they have, or its a short valve. the mavic cosmic is a 34 mm deep rim.

sooooo yah:

1) what are some longer valve tubular tires?
2) For tubular tires that have shorter valves, i can attach a valve extension? Do all presta valves have "removable valve cores" or is that sort of rare and need a specific tire to fit extensions? can i just buy any sort of tubular, and if it has a too short valve (which many seem to for my rims) can i just buy any valve extension and be cool?

any info is super appreciated. sorry if this is covered on some webpage or google or sheldon brown or whatever. just thought i would ask since im here and this thread is about tubulars.

TejanoTrackie

1) Tubular tires all have the same rather short valve stem, and require the addition of some sort of valve extender for use on deep section rims.

2) Most medium to high quality tubular tires have removable valve cores, and can be used with true valve extenders, which relocate the valve core to the end of the extender and outside of the wheel rim.

3) Some el cheapo tubulars do not have removable valve cores, and can only be used with valve stem extenders which screw onto the outside of the valve. The valve nut is left unscrewed to permit the tire to be pumped up.
