Classic & Vintage - 82 Austro Daimler Olympian- suggestions?

This is a new addition today ('82 AD Olympian) that I stumbled across and couldn't pass up.
I will have to buy derailleurs and sidepull brakes.
Original to the bike was Huret and Diacompe (edit: Weinmann 605 brakes).
I just want decent period correct parts, any suggestions?

Thats nice. My old AD came with Huret. It was early 80's as well. I got it...well, in the 80's :) I seem to recall NOrmandy hubs, huret shifters, derailleurs, and I think I had Weinman brakes.

Some A-Ds used Shimano and those would be easier to find (and in some cases better working) than the Huret stuff. Maybe some early 600...but if it was my bike, I wouldn't hesitate to put anything I liked on it, and that would include SunTour Cyclone changers and Superbe brakes (or other high-end DiaCompe brake products).

There should still be pictures of my old 82 Olympian (pearl white) on the Classic Rendezvous site, Dale took pictures of it while I was at the shop about 5 years ago. It had Normandy sealed hubs (red seals), weinmann rims, Nervar crank with drillium rings, Huret shifters and FD, someone had changed the RD to Shimano deer head R700.

Funny, most manufacturers have the chain in the big ring small cog for marketing photos. That looks like a TON of chain, tad droopy even. 53/42 and 14-30...big gears. Nice looking bike though.

Also, the handlebars need to be tilted up about 5 degrees.

In '82 Suntour was in its prime; I'd look into a Suntour drivetrain.

Here's my update.
Cleaned up the frame a bit and discovered the rear is spread to 130. The seattube is larger than 27.2 and may have been abused when removing stuck post, as there is minor ding (new) on top of seat cluster lug. Decided to build it cheaply, ride it and chose what course to pursue. Reject, Keeper, Special Ride. So then I took a few measurements and I believe there is more BB drop and a steeper head tube angle.

This is a vintage frame more in line with my newish custom frames. So the hope begins to stir that this could be a Special Ride 531 style. Hhmm, 130 rear...... Go to the meager spare stuff closet, slip on a wheel with a Campy 10 cluster, .... Hhmmm... Special Ride deserves special treatment. Newish Campy, more gears, maybe?... Not much missing to put together a 9 speed group. Win 9 speed shifters on fleabay with aluminum brakes levers.

Then an opportunity for most of a Shimano 600 Arabesque group comes along and I bite.

So I have a choice - classic or modern drivetrain/brakes?

I think the decision comes after riding the bike with cheapo build.
Any problems respacing the rear from 130 to 120?

you could just use a long axle and space something out to 130...

I love my A-D, I've got it with a 7 speed IGH and a coaster brake. I've had it done up half a dozen different ways, but the frame is a keeper for sure.

Some of the later higher-end Huret kit was not too bad. Otherwise, I like the SunTour suggestion.

Heuret is harder to find and I'm not patient enough.

The original Duopar setup is cool, but if it's already spread to 130 you might as well go modern. I've always wanted to try a Campy racing triple RD.

+1 again to suntour. plus, no DT braze-ons gives you a reason to use those awesome Power Ratchet DTs

192433192432192431Nice frame. I have two AD Olympians, one a 57 cm bare frame, and one a complete original 59192430 cm. Original componenets are nervar crankset, huret duopar fd and rr, and normandy hubs. I loook forward to your build with modern components192429. Here are a few pics.

+10 Go Suntour. On a budget, you can pick up Vx derailleurs cheap. They work fine. Or move up a couple of steps and get Cyclone. In my experience, the Cyclone stuff goes for a lot more, 4 to 5X or higher, so on a budget, Vx is just fine.

I like early 80's Suntour a lot as well. Trying to find a nice frame to put a Cyclone 6000 I have here and it is so nice nice.

I have 600 Arabesque on one of my bikes and it is like butter. No complaints out of me on the 600 group. In fact it is probably nicest friction shifting bike in my fleet right now. I think either would be a good pick.

I don't think those were sealed hubs. They just have plastic dust caps.

Should I ride it singlespeed until I get this derailleur cable routing thing resolved? And the remaining parts are yet to arrive.
The geared road bike stable is at 8, maybe the next should be 1X1 (at least temporarily).
