Classic & Vintage - My First Pug, a CFX10 'Super Competition'

A project picked up this week needing a good cleaning and some new bar tape, a Peugeot PX10 'Super Competition'. This was the personal ride of one of the owners of a lbs that flourished from the mid 70s through the late 80s. The owner bought the frame and fork and built it up the way he wanted, including Huret Jubile ders, Peugeot-branded Nervar cranks with Lyotard pedals, Mafac/Spidel brakeset, Atax/Philippe bars and stem, Simplex Retrofriction shifters, Campy NR headset, LePrade seatpost, Ideale 80 saddle, and sealed Normandie large-flange hubs laced to Mavic G40 rims. If I've misspelled any of the components, I'm easy to correct. I bought it off the employee he sold it to who 'didn't like the way it rode.' The RD is the first I've ever seen with a toothless pulley wheel.

Great find. That should clean up very well.

It looks like most of the hardware pre-dates the frame by a few years?

Try to retain the Mafac/Spidel LS2 brakeset as it is a good quality component from the period early 80's.
It's really the last good brakeset that Mafac made and the fact that it was pulled into the Spidel group speaks well for it's quaility. I'm a fan of the brakeset myself, and I have it on both my French bikes. I have all sorts of other supposedly higher level NOS brakesets, but I still can't find a reason to replace the Spidels with them as they perform so well and look so good!

Nice find. I just bought a '79 (I think) because
I so much liked the ride of the one I got last
fall from Joe Englert. Truly "de gustibus non
disputandum" or in your case :thumb:

I'm about midway in reassembly with mine, so
no photos of the finished machine, but as

My impression is as yours, that by this time
they were ordered as frames and built up
with buyer selected components, often
assembled by the shop that sold them.
(Any one know if this is true, partly true,
or totally BS ?)

If both of these perform as nicely as my first

Yeah, I forgot to mention that in my post.
That's probably not the AVA "death stem",
but it is similar in look and design. Usually
in the better French bikes it ends up being
a much thicker and more durable stem, but
it still has the same overall configurations
and ought to be replaced whenever you
come up with something. (If you look
at the last photo, you'll notice i'm still
riding that first PX with one.:eek:

I have one on my own PX10... (So far so good, though I'll refrain from doing any BMX stunts with it.)

auchencrow, that's pretty much what it looks like, though I'm at work and the bike is in the garage at home so I can't confirm for certain.
