i just got a lot of great campy stuff from a friend of mine for my merckx project, i pretty sure it is a 1981 professional frame, with the stuff i got a couple sets of hubs, both record, one with the world logo and "record" below the globe, the other has the winged logo with the sheild. both hubs have the oil hole covers. i pulled the locknuts off to see the date the globe ones were 74, but the shield ones dont have any #s on the locknuts. my question is when did they change the globe logo to the shield? im trying to keep everything 1983 below. also my merckx came with a aero seat post, when did these come out?

also i have some rim questions too:o what clincher rims would be correct for it? the hubs i have are 36 hole, were rims colored (not silver) back then? i want to build a set of tubulars for it too, but thats for another day!

Shield logo hubs are not Record. If you slip the oil cover off, you will probably not find a hole. I understand it was common back in the day to put oil covers to make them look like Record.

there is a hole under the cover, doesnt look like a homemade drilling either. they were laced to campy gamma clincher wheels if that helps date them.

I've seen this before, but don't know what to make of it.

The aero post is later than the date you're shooting for. It should get good enough money for you to purchase a correct super record one, however.

i thought the aero post was newer, my buddy has a super record post i will try to get from him. any ideas on what kind of rims to put on it?

...purchase a correct super record one..

There were a couple of different versions of the one-bolt Super post, too. Up 'till about '83, I think...the top had a satin blasted finish, and after that, the post tops were polished.

C-Record was seen on some bikes as early as '84, but not too many folks had access to '84 C-Record.

As for rims, yes, black anodized or colors were available then. :)

The narrow clincher rims I remember from 1980/81 are the Super Champion Gentleman, Rigida 1320 and the Mavic Module E.

Oh yes, you are allowed to use kevlar-beaded, folding clincher tires too as the Specialized Turbo S was the rage of the day.

My early 80's merckx came with ambrosio super elite 19's. And yes, please post pics!

I concur. Fiamme and Weinmann were pretty popular then, as well.

The Ambrosio Elite 19 Durex version was also available back in that era. It has a dull bronze finish due to anodizing and heat treating. It's a very strong rim but a true PITA to mount narrow clinchers onto them. I think the Ambrosio 19's came a little taller than most.
