No pics or anything, just some short rides over the past few days since the temps have been in or around 50 here in Chicagoland for the past few days. Has felt good to get off the trainer and on to the streets.

I almost took the studs off today...glad you were out there indiana!

Hell yes I took advantage!

Went out on a new route and rode for 33 miles wearing an Under Armour Hot Gear T-shirt and some shorts. Heck I even got a little bit sun burned! http://www.southwestdrags.com/forum/images/smilies/wow003.gif

Till one of the chainlinks failed. Jamming the rear derailer, which in turn jammed the spokes.
Making the whole wheel jump out of the dropout. Came to a skidding stop. Didn't want to
bother anybody for a ride, just walked home. :(

That doesn't look like a failed link, it looks like the RD jammed, they normally don't sit at that angle. it should be more tucked under the wheel. The top (actually bottom) pulley should be over against the wheel with the chain that loose. Hopefully it's just dirt in the pivots and a good cleaning will return it to proper operation.

I did. The weather has been in the 50's or higher and I did a nice 20 miler the other day to stretch everything out after 3 months off the bike. Gonna do another one this week end before taking off on a much needed dive trip.

No pics, but I have put 30 miles in over the last 3 days and am going with a friend to see if we can get a ride in with our tw girls before the temps dip below 50 again. Which reminds me I need to go load the bikes into the car soon.

No pics, but yesterday got up to the lower 60's F. I rode my hardtail with slicks and loved it. Today it is windy with temps in the Low 20's F. I'm riding my touring bike with fenders.

No pics either but I did take advantage of the warm weather and rode my bike a couple of times. It felt lovely to be on my bike, whooshing past pedestrians. The pot holes are super impressive this year. Looks like later next week we might have another warm spell. Yes!

Haha, little something different, new scenes so it's all good. I have to say I was disappointed when you looked straight up the tree. I was expecting you to scale it scary movie style.:D

I managed to put 50 miles on. 8-13" of snow coming tomorrow so back off the bike for a while :(

Well, it was 65-70 degrees here the last few days, but it dropped back into the 30's today. BUT, it was sunny, so I took The Coda out for my second ride outside--with 19-25 mph winds. Learned a lot today:


Head winds STINK! Had to down shift going DOWN HILL once.

18 miles in 1:41:08 is one hick of a workout with 1575 feet of elevation gain and headwinds. Actually had to get off the bike and walk about 100 yards to finish a hill--hope I can train my way out of that!
Never look at the other driveway (we have 2) and wonder why your wife didn't park her van in the garage while unclipping. Fell for the first time, goofed up the right side tape (able to patch it with color matched electric tape,) and scuffed my new Brooks Saddle.
Riding outside is WAY more fun than inside
My chest feels a bit congested--hope that goes away soon....


Here's a pic of The Coda at about 5.5 miles in. I stopped to adjust the position of the brake levers and tilt the seat back just a bit.

Took advantage of the "nice" weather this morning to do my shorty hill bomber/chain stretcher (haven't decided on the name yet) ride; Only about twelve miles worth of pedaling.
Just a couple degrees above freezing, super-uber windy, but beautiful clear sunshine (a rarity around here this time of year) with great views of the Olympics and downtown Seattle across the water...

Pssshhhh, yesterday was the worst day of weather we've had since LAST winter in central coast CA. Not that I'm complaining really since I've been riding in nice weather all of January and February, but still...I did miss 2 days of riding this week because of weather.

What nice weather, it got warmer here, rained for two days with 50km/h winds gusting still higher, then got cold and with the wind off the bay we got lake effect snow, bah, only riding I do this time of year is on the trainer going nowhere....

This is exactly why I DON'T use shimano chains anymore. I had one open up facing forward and rip my front derailleur off. Didn't amuse me in the slightest. Now I use SRAM chains with a powerlink. They are way more secure and work with Shimano parts.

I believe the last shop which replaced my cassette and chain used KMC.
This was back in Sept/Oct I think.
Does anybody know if a SRAM powerlink can be used to fix my KMC chain?
Even though they're different makers, they should be the same size,
9 speed, 10 speed, etc.?

That's a failed link all right, the question is why it failed, there are a few reasons for a failure:

1) The chain was broken there and not put back together properly.
2) Something caught in the chain and jammed it, forcing the link apart....
3) Faulty workmanship during manufacture.

Those reasons for a failure are pretty much in the order of commonality....

It does however look like the outer plate is bent, whether it bent when it failed or it bent causing it to fail, is the question. It looks like something like a twig or a small piece of metal caught in the chain, forced the link open when it got to the metal piece over the jockey pulley and that forced the chain apart. Of course once the chain failed the piece fell away into the dirt. This is why I usually carry a chain tool and a couple of spare links....

I had a great ride today. No frost on the bayou.... weather is perfect. 32 miles in a very fast, for me, pace line. I got dropped on the first leg, 1/2 mile from a re grouping point. After that I was able to hang with the group.

Insert my usual babbling about the virtues of group and especially pace line rides.

No riding for me, I'm in the middle of a move and spent the whole day cleaning the old place. I'll do the same thing Sunday. Life gets in the way sometimes, you know? I signed up for a metric century in April and every day's closer to do or die, though. Problem is, I have pretty much zero desire to ride my road bike, which can be problematic. Stay tuned to "As the Dork Rides."

no ride today, but I took the nice weather and re-planted my garden. Dog decided she would dig holes where I planted my lettuce and spinach. Afterward I put a hotwire up to keep her out. After nap time, went and mowed and cleaned up the yard. Spent more time working on the mower than actuall mowing. I think it felt better than riding to get these to dos off the list, and the yard isn't overgrown anymore.

Got our once a year dusting of snow last night here in No. CA. Waited until mid-afternoon when the temps came up a bit and went out for a nice 20 mile ride. Was rained on, got a flat, but was rewarded at the end with a big rainbow.
