What are a few good mountain bike tires, brake, and helmets? I've already got my mountain bike, but my tires and breaks are very old and its time to change them. Oh, I'm sort of a newbie. lol Also, nothing TOO expensive as I'm a student and don't have a whole lot of money. I heard Giro helmets are a good brand?

yup, better off buying a helmet and saving your money until that bike doesnt move anymore then looking for something used.

for good equipment and clearance pricing. There are other places online that are just as good. I believe in helmets. Some of the cruelest falls are when you are travelling less than 5 mph. Start with a good helmet.

If you need to keep it rolling for awhile, just get some tires at Walmart type stores. Good prices and tires quality for that bike. Most all of us have had those kinds of bikes for a while. Everyone starts there.

I've owned LOTS of cheap bicycles so I guess you don't have to be too embarassed. But, looking at that stem, bars and brake levers just makes me want to hurl. I can just tell by looking at it, it probably doesn't "feel right" when you ride it. Anyway...

For a cheap bicycle like that, I might go with Promax brakes (requires noodles):

If you wanted to upgrade that, I'd go with dual compound Kool Stop brake pads.
